Shurahbil bin Sa'd narrates from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said about the fear prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood, and one group stood behind him (peace and blessings be upon him), and another group was sitting behind the group that was behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), all of them with their faces toward the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, and both groups said the takbir. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed, and the group behind him (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed while the others remained sitting. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prostrated, and they also prostrated while the others remained sitting. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and they (the first group) stood up, and they moved back and sat in the place of their companions. The other group came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in one rak'ah and two prostrations and then gave the salam, while the others remained sitting. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had given the salam, both groups stood up and performed for themselves one rak'ah and two prostrations, one rak'ah and two prostrations."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it, although they used all its narrators as evidence except Shurahbil; and Shurahbil is a Madinan Tabi'i who is not accused of anything.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) The chain is weak because of the weakness of Shurahbil bin Sa'd. Reference / Source: Ibn Khuzaymah (1351), Ibn al-Mundhir, al-Tahawi and Ibn Hibban (2888) narrated it through Sa'id bin Abi Maryam. 1/ 529 - 532. Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to Imam al-Tahawi, this narration is impossible (muhal), contrary to reason and transmitted evidence, because it mentions the followers beginning the prayer while seated, which is invalid. Other sahih narrations from Jabir contradict it.
Grading: (2) Al-Dhahabi said that Ibn Abi Dhi'b criticised Shurahbil as "muttaham" (accused of lying), and al-Daraqutni called him weak.
