It is narrated from Iyad bin Abdullah that Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque on Friday while Marwan bin al-Hakam was delivering the sermon. He stood up to pray (tahiyyat al-masjid), and the guards came to make him sit down, but he refused until he had prayed. When Marwan finished and turned away, we came to him and said: May Allah have mercy on you, they were just about to (treat you harshly). He said: I could never abandon it (these two rak'ahs) after something I saw from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he mentioned a man who came on Friday while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon, then he came again the next Friday while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the people to give charity, and that man threw down one of his two garments (as charity). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer, then rebuked him and said: "Take your garment." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This man entered in a very shabby state, so I ordered the people to give charity, and he gave one of his two garments." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to pray two rak'ahs.

Sayyiduna Abu Rifa'ah al-Adawi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was delivering the sermon, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! A stranger has come to ask about his religion; he does not know what his religion is. He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards me and left his sermon. Then a wooden chair with iron legs was brought for him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to teach me from what Allah had taught him. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to his sermon and completed it.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah al-Suwa'i (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever tells you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the sermon sitting on the pulpit, call him a liar, for I bear witness that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the sermon standing, then sit, then stand again and deliver a second sermon. The narrator said: I asked: What was his (peace and blessings be upon him) sermon like? He said: It was speech with which he (peace and blessings be upon him) admonished the people, and he recited verses from the Book of Allah, then he came down from the pulpit. His (peace and blessings be upon him) sermon and prayer were both moderate. In the prayer he would recite surahs like "By the sun and its morning brightness" and "By the sky and the night-comer", except for the Fajr and Zuhr prayers. (Sayyiduna) Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) would call the adhan when the sun had passed its zenith; then, if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, he would call the iqamah, otherwise he would remain silent until he (peace and blessings be upon him) came. The Asr and Maghrib prayers were just like your prayer, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray the Isha prayer a little later than your prayer.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but he did not record it with this detail. He recorded only two brief sentences from the narration of Abu al-Ahwas from Simak: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver two sermons, sitting between them" and "His (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer was moderate."

I have warned you of the Fire!" (He (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying it so loudly that) if a man had been in the market, he too would have heard it from this place of mine, until the cloak on his (peace and blessings be upon him) shoulder fell at his (peace and blessings be upon him) feet.
