Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1066

It is narrated from Iyad bin Abdullah that Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque on Friday while Marwan bin al-Hakam was delivering the sermon. He stood up to pray (tahiyyat al-masjid), and the guards came to make him sit down, but he refused until he had prayed. When Marwan finished and turned away, we came to him and said: May Allah have mercy on you, they were just about to (treat you harshly). He said: I could never abandon it (these two rak'ahs) after something I saw from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he mentioned a man who came on Friday while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon, then he came again the next Friday while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the people to give charity, and that man threw down one of his two garments (as charity). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer, then rebuked him and said: "Take your garment." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This man entered in a very shabby state, so I ordered the people to give charity, and he gave one of his two garments." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to pray two rak'ahs.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) The chain is strong because of Muhammad bin Ajlan. Al-Humaydi is Abdullah bin al-Zubayr and Sufyan is Ibn Uyaynah.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1675), Ibn Majah, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i narrated it at length and in brief through the routes of Sufyan bin Uyaynah. Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (17/11197), al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban (2503) narrated it through the chain of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan from Muhammad bin Ajlan.
Repetition: It will come again in al-Mustadrak in brief at no. (1522) with the same chain.
Grading: The narration in Musnad Ahmad of "the Bedouin coming and sitting down during the sermon and his (peace and blessings be upon him) ordering him to pray two rak'ahs": this chain is weak because of the weakness of Ibn Lahi'ah.
(Note / Clarification): "Khudh thawbak" (take your garment): according to Ibn Hibban, this shows that one may take back charity if it has not yet reached the recipient's hand, and it is also evidence that a person should not give away all his wealth in charity but should give what exceeds his needs.
(Note / Clarification): "Hay'ah badhdhah", that is, a shabby state showing poverty and want.
General principle: There is a difference of opinion about praying two rak'ahs during the sermon; some forbade it, but the preferred view is that the two rak'ahs (tahiyyat al-masjid) should be prayed, as established by the hadith.
