Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1069

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah al-Suwa'i (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever tells you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the sermon sitting on the pulpit, call him a liar, for I bear witness that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the sermon standing, then sit, then stand again and deliver a second sermon. The narrator said: I asked: What was his (peace and blessings be upon him) sermon like? He said: It was speech with which he (peace and blessings be upon him) admonished the people, and he recited verses from the Book of Allah, then he came down from the pulpit. His (peace and blessings be upon him) sermon and prayer were both moderate. In the prayer he would recite surahs like "By the sun and its morning brightness" and "By the sky and the night-comer", except for the Fajr and Zuhr prayers. (Sayyiduna) Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) would call the adhan when the sun had passed its zenith; then, if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, he would call the iqamah, otherwise he would remain silent until he (peace and blessings be upon him) came. The Asr and Maghrib prayers were just like your prayer, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray the Isha prayer a little later than your prayer.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but he did not record it with this detail. He recorded only two brief sentences from the narration of Abu al-Ahwas from Simak: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver two sermons, sitting between them" and "His (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer was moderate."

Technical note: (2) In the manuscripts the name had become "Muhammad"; the correct name is "Hamid bin Mahmud al-Muqri'", who is a trustworthy narrator.

Grading: (3) The chain is "hasan" because of Simak bin Harb.
