Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent this message to Banu Lihyan: One of every two men should go out for jihad, and both will receive the reward.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the Battle of Hunain, we captured prisoners. We wanted to release them in exchange for ransom, so we asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about withdrawal (azl). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do as you wish, whatever Allah has decreed will happen, and a child is not created from every drop of semen.

It is narrated as testimony from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whenever a group of people sits together to remember Allah, the angels surround them, tranquility descends upon them, mercy covers them, and Allah mentions them among those who are with Him in the highest assembly.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade making nabidh by mixing unripe and ripe dates, or dates and raisins.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of the Trench, we did not get the opportunity to perform the prayers, until some time had passed after Maghrib. When our sufficiency in the matter of fighting was achieved, that is, Allah had said that Allah will suffice the believers in fighting, and Allah is Powerful and Mighty, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Hazrat Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he gave the iqamah for Zuhr. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer excellently, as he used to lead in normal times. Then he had the iqamah called and led the Asr prayer in the same way as he used to lead at its time. Similarly, he led the Maghrib prayer at its own time. Until that time, the command for the prayer of fear had not been revealed.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates, and salt for salt should be exchanged equally. Whoever adds to it or demands an addition, he engages in usury, and in this both the taker and the giver are equal.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Those with high ranks in Paradise will be seen in such a way as you see the shining stars on the horizon of the sky, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) will also be among them, and both of them will be in bliss and comfort there.

Iyad (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that sometimes one of us is praying and he does not remember how many rak'ahs he has prayed? He replied that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When any one of you is praying and does not remember how many rak'ahs he has prayed, he should perform two prostrations of forgetfulness while sitting. And when Satan comes to any one of you and says that your ablution has broken, then say to him: "You are lying," unless he smells something with his nose or hears a sound with his ears.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wore a new garment, he would first mention its name, for example, shirt or turban, then he would recite this supplication: O Allah! All praise is due to You, for You have clothed me with this garment. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it was made for, and I seek refuge with You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the uncle of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Khawaja Abu Talib, was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Perhaps my intercession will benefit him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be placed in a corner of Hell, and the fire will reach up to his ankles, due to which his brain will boil like a cauldron.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed (may Allah be pleased with him) that we used to travel with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the month of Ramadan, so some of us would fast and some would not fast, but the one who fasted would not find fault with the one who did not fast, nor would the one who did not fast find fault with the one who fasted. (This means that when a person had the strength to fast, he would do so, and if he did not have the strength, he would leave it and make it up later.)

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out a detachment: I was also included in it. We reached a settlement and requested hospitality from the people of the tribe, but they refused to host us. After a short while, one of them came and said, "O group of Arabs! Does anyone among you know how to perform ruqyah (spiritual healing)?" I asked him, "What happened?" He said, "The chief of our settlement is about to die." We went with him, and I recited Surah Al-Fatiha several times and performed ruqyah on him, and he recovered. They sent us food and goats to take with us. My companions said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not given us any instruction regarding this, so we will not accept it until we reach the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Thus, we drove the goats and presented ourselves before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned the whole incident. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said, "How did you know that it is a ruqyah?" Then he said, "Take that herd of goats and include my share in it as well." I submitted, "It just came to my heart."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up at night and begin the prayer by saying Allahu Akbar, he would say: Subhanak Allahumma wa bihamdika wa tabarakasmuka wa ta’ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghayruk, then say La ilaha illallah three times. Then he would say: A’udhu billahi as-sami’ al-‘aleem min ash-shaytan ir-rajim min hamzihi wa nafkhihi, then say Allahu Akbar three times, then again say: A’udhu billahi as-sami’ al-‘aleem min ash-shaytan ir-rajim min hamzihi wa nafkhihi wa nafthihi.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The awe and fear of people should not prevent any of you from speaking the truth, when he himself sees it, witnesses it, or hears it, because by speaking the truth or mentioning an important matter, death does not come closer nor does sustenance go farther away.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to receive mixed dates to eat, and we would give two sa’ of dates, for example, in exchange for one sa’. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know of this, he said: "It is not permissible to give two sa’ in exchange for one sa’, nor is it permissible to give two sa’ of wheat in exchange for one sa’, nor two dirhams in exchange for one dirham."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you see a funeral, stand up, and whoever accompanies the funeral should not sit down before the funeral is placed on the ground.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I have a slave girl and I practice coitus interruptus with her. I desire from her what a man desires, but I do not like her to become pregnant. The Jews say that coitus interruptus is a minor form of burying alive." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The Jews are wrong. If Allah intends to create something, no one has the power to prevent it."

Iyad (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that sometimes one of us is praying and does not remember how many rak'ahs he has prayed? He replied that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When any one of you is praying and does not remember how many rak'ahs he has prayed, he should perform two prostrations of forgetfulness while sitting. And when Satan comes to any one of you and says that your ablution has broken, then say to him: "You are lying," unless he smells something from his nose or hears its sound with his ears.

Abu Al-Jawza says that I asked Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) about buying and selling gold and silver with an increase or decrease, but in cash, so he said that there is no harm if it is two for one or with an increase or decrease, as long as it is in cash. After some time, I was again blessed with the opportunity to perform Hajj, and Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was still alive at that time. I asked him the same question again, so he said that with cash, the weight of both should also be equal. I said to him that earlier you gave me the fatwa that even two for one is permissible, and since then I have been telling people the same ruling. He said that was my opinion; later, Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to me, so I abandoned my opinion in favor of the hadith.

Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a man was narrating to Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) a hadith from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the buying and selling of gold and silver. The man had not yet finished his statement when Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) himself entered the house. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took hold of my hand and that man’s hand, and we went to Abu Sa’id (may Allah be pleased with him). He stood up to welcome Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: “He has narrated a hadith to me, and according to him, you narrated this hadith to him from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Did you really hear this hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?” He replied: “I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: ‘Sell gold for gold and silver for silver, equal for equal. Do not increase or decrease, and do not sell something absent for something present among them.’”

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Where there are three people, at the time of prayer one should become the imam, and among them, the one who knows the most Qur'an has the greatest right to lead.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that once they set out on a journey with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and when they camped, they split into different groups. I went into the group where Hazrat Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present. There was also a Bedouin man with us. In the house of the villagers where we were staying, there was a woman who was "expecting." The Bedouin said to the woman, "Do you wish to have a son born to you? If you give me a goat, a son will be born to you." The woman gave him a goat, and the Bedouin recited several rhyming words of the same weight (as a charm) in front of her and then slaughtered the goat. When people sat down at the dining cloth to eat, a man said to the people, "Do you even know what kind of goat this is?" Then he narrated the whole incident to the people. I saw that Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was putting his fingers in his throat and vomiting it out.

Qaza'ah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once he heard Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrating a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I liked it. I went closer to him and asked, "Did you really hear this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" At this, he became very angry and said, "Would I narrate any hadith that I did not hear from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? Yes! I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Mounts should not be saddled for a journey except to three mosques: al-Masjid al-Haram, the Prophet’s Mosque, and al-Masjid al-Aqsa.' And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'A woman should not travel except with her husband or a mahram.' And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Fasting should not be observed on two days: the day of Eid al-Fitr and the day of Eid al-Adha.' And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'No voluntary prayers should be performed at two times: after the Asr prayer until sunset, and after the Fajr prayer until sunrise.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I give you the glad tidings of Mahdi, who will not appear among my Ummah until differences and earthquakes become widespread. He will fill the earth with justice and fairness just as it was previously filled with oppression and tyranny. The inhabitants of the heavens will be pleased with him, and so will the inhabitants of the earth. In his time, Allah will fill the hearts of the Ummah of Muhammad with wealth, and no one will be in need of another. He will even command a caller, who will announce: Whoever is in need of wealth, let him come to us. Only one man will come to him and say: I am in need. He will say to him: Go to the treasurer and tell him that Mahdi commands you to give me wealth. The treasurer, according to the command, will say: Take with your own hands as much as you can. When he gathers it in a cloth and ties it up, he will feel ashamed and say to himself: I am the greediest among the Ummah of Muhammad; was there not enough for me as there was for others? (Thinking this, he will return all the wealth, but it will not be taken back from him, and he will be told: We do not take back what we have given.) This situation will remain for seven, or eight, or nine years. After that, there will be no benefit in life.

Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us, Ja'far ibn Sulayman narrated to me, al-Mu'alla ibn Ziyad narrated to us, from al-'Ala' ibn Bashir al-Muzani—who used to weep at remembrance and was courageous at confrontation—from Abu al-Siddiq al-Naji, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, the like of it, and he added in it: "So he regrets, and he brings it to the custodian, and he says to him: 'We do not accept anything we have given.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: No person will be able to enter Paradise without Allah’s mercy. The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Not even you?" He replied, "Not even me, unless my Lord covers me with His forgiveness and mercy." After saying this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) placed his hand on his head.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The lower garment of a Muslim should reach to the middle of the shin; there is no harm if it is between the shin and the ankles, but the part of the lower garment that is below the ankles will be in the Hellfire.

Yazid al-Faqir says that once I said to Hazrat Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that there were some people among us who recited the Qur'an more than all of us, prayed the most, maintained family ties, and fasted, but now they have come before us with swords drawn. He replied that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that soon a people will emerge who will recite the Qur'an but it will not go below their throats, and they will leave the religion just as an arrow passes through its prey.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prayer on a mat and prostrated on it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (When the heat becomes intense) perform the Zuhr prayer at a cooler time, because the intensity of heat is due to the effect of the heat of Hell.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people with abundance of wealth and riches have been ruined." We became afraid. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Except for those who distribute it with both hands, to their right, left, and in front, but such people are very few."

It is narrated that once Marwan brought out the pulpit on the day of Eid, which was not usually brought out, and he started giving the sermon before the prayer, which had never happened before. Seeing this, a man stood up and said, "Marwan! You have opposed the Sunnah. You brought out the pulpit on the day of Eid, which was not brought out before, and you gave the sermon before the prayer, which had never happened before." In that gathering, Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present. He asked, "Who is this man?" People informed him that he is so-and-so, son of so-and-so. He said, "This person has fulfilled his responsibility. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he is not able to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart—and that is the weakest level of faith.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed prayer by placing both ends of a cloth over both his shoulders.

Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a man was narrating to Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) a hadith from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the buying and selling of gold and silver. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took my hand and that man’s hand, and we went to Abu Sa’id (may Allah be pleased with him). He stood up to welcome Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: “He has narrated to me a hadith, and according to him, you narrated this hadith to him from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Did you really hear this hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?” He replied: “I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: ‘Sell gold for gold and silver for silver, equal for equal. Do not increase or decrease, and do not sell something absent for something present among them.’”

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the ruling if the calf of a she-camel or a cow dies in its womb. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you wish, you may eat it, because the slaughtering of its mother is in fact its slaughtering.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the heat becomes intense, perform the prayer at a cooler time, because the severity of heat is due to the effect of Hell.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (When the heat becomes intense) perform the Zuhr prayer at a cooler time, for the severity of heat is from the effect of the heat of Hell.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The awe, fear, and grandeur of people should not prevent any of you from speaking the truth when he sees it himself, witnesses it, or hears it. Hazrat Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I wish I had not heard this hadith.

Iyad (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that sometimes one of us is praying and he does not remember how many rak'ahs he has prayed? He replied that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When any one of you is praying and does not remember how many rak'ahs he has prayed, he should perform two prostrations of forgetfulness while sitting. And when Satan comes to any one of you and says that your ablution has broken, then say to him: "You are lying," unless he smells something with his nose or hears its sound with his ears. The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

Narrated to us by Suwayd ibn Amr, narrated to us by Aban, narrated to us by Yahya, from Hilal ibn Iyad, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When one of you prays," and he mentioned its meaning.
