Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah says: It is enough for a man's misfortune that he spends the night in such a state that Satan urinates in his ear, so he wakes up in the morning without remembering God.

Hazrat Awn bin Abdullah says that a man recited this verse { ہَلْ أَتَی عَلَی الإِنْسَان حِینٌ مِنَ الدَّہْرِ لَمْ یَکُنْ شَیْئًا مَذْکُورًا } before Hazrat Ibn Masood. Upon this, Hazrat Abdullah said: Beware! If only this matter would be fulfilled.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Whoever has woken up today, he is a guest and his wealth is borrowed. So, the guest is to depart and the borrowed is to be returned.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah regarding the saying of Allah { یَسْعَی نُورُہُمْ بَیْنَ أَیْدِیہِمْ }. He said: These people will be given light according to their deeds. The light of some people will be like a mountain, and among them, the one with the least light will be such that his light will be on his thumb. Sometimes it will extinguish and sometimes it will shine.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Prosperous in this world, prosperous in the Hereafter; distressed in this world, distressed in the Hereafter; prosperous in this world, distressed in the Hereafter—will be with comfort and ease.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah regarding the Divine Command { تُوبُوا إِلَی اللہِ تَوْبَۃً نَصُوحًا }. He, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Sincere repentance (tawbah nasuh) is that a person repents and then does not commit that sin again.

Hazrat Abdullah says: Whoever intends the world will suffer loss in the Hereafter, and whoever intends the Hereafter will suffer loss in the world.

Hazrat Abdullah says that I become very angry at the person whom I see idle in such a way that he is not engaged in any work of this world or the Hereafter.

Hazrat Abdullah says: Whoever likes that he gives Allah His full due from himself, then he should go to those people who like others to come to them.

Hazrat Abdullah says: By Him besides whom there is no deity, no believing servant has been given anything better than having a good opinion of Allah. And by Him besides whom there is no deity, no believing servant has a good opinion of Allah except that Allah grants him goodness. For all goodness is in His control.

It is narrated from Abdullah, he says: It is near that even the wasp may be punished in its hole because of the sins of the son of Adam. Then he, may Allah be pleased with him, recited this verse: { وَلَوْ یُؤَاخِذُ اللَّہُ النَّاسَ بِمَا کَسَبُوا }.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu’l-Ahwas that he says Hazrat Abdullah said: Do not try to overpower this night, because you do not have the strength for it. So when any of you feels drowsy, he should go to his bed and sleep. Because this is a better thing.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: On the Day of Resurrection, every person among the people will wish that whatever he used to eat in the world was only to the extent of sustaining life... eating just enough to survive... and nothing of the world, whether morning or evening, in whatever condition it may be, will harm any of you if there is no pain in his heart. And it is better for any of you to hold a burning coal until it is extinguished than for a person to say about any matter decided by Allah: "I wish this had not happened."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ubaidah that he says Hazrat Abdullah said: Surely this is written in the Torah. Verily, Allah Almighty has prepared such blessings for those whose sides remain apart from their beds, which no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no thought of them has crossed any servant’s heart, and which no angel or messenger knows. Then he said: We recite this (here): { فَلاَ تَعْلَمُ نَفْسٌ مَا أُخْفِیَ لَہُمْ مِنْ قُرَّۃِ أَعْیُنٍ }

It is narrated from Hadassah Tai who says that a bird hunted from the place of Sharaf was brought to Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: I would love to be at the place where this bird was hunted, so that no human speaks to me and I do not speak to any human, until I meet Allah.

It is narrated from Hazrat Khaythamah that he says Hazrat Abdullah said: Observe people near their sleeping places. So when you see a servant dying in the best state, then have hope of good for him, and when you see a servant dying in the worst state, then fear for him. Because when he is wretched... even if some of his deeds amaze people... then a devil is appointed for him who leads him astray and destroys him until that wretchedness overtakes him which is destined for him. And when a servant is fortunate... even if some of his deeds are disliked by people... then an angel is appointed for him who guides him and sets him on the right path until the destined happiness overtakes him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu’l-Ahwas that he says Hazrat Abdullah said: Make a habit of goodness, for there is excellence in habit.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aswad that he says Hazrat Abdullah said: Whether the soul is good or bad, in any case, death is better for it than life. If the soul is righteous, then the command of Allah is: { وَمَا عِنْدَ اللہِ خَیْرٌ لِلأَبْرَارِ } and if the soul is bad, then the command of Allah is: { وَلاَ یَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِینَ کَفَرُوا أَنَمَّا نُمْلِی لَہُمْ خَیْرٌ لأَنْفُسِہِمْ إنَّمَا نُمْلِی لَہُمْ لِیَزْدَادُوا إِثْمًا وَلَہُمْ عَذَابٌ مُہِینٌ}.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Kanf that a man saw a dream. So he began to relate that dream to Hazrat Ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) ... that man was fat ... Hazrat Ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I dislike that a reciter (Qari) is fat ... The narrator A’mash says ... I mentioned this narration to Ibrahim, so he said: A fat man forgets the Qur’an.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Al-Ahwas that he says Hazrat Abdullah said: With every happiness there is sorrow.

It is narrated from Hazrat Masruq that he says: A drink was brought to Hazrat Abdullah, so he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Give this drink to Alqamah." Alqamah said: "I am fasting." Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Give this drink to Aswad." Aswad said: "I am fasting." In this way, the drink was passed by all the people, then he himself took the drink and drank it, then recited this verse: { یَخَافُونَ یَوْمًا تَتَقَلَّبُ فِیہِ الْقُلُوبُ وَالأَبْصَارُ }

Hazrat Abdullah says: The portion of the world that has passed is like the hem of a mountain whose cleanliness has ended and only impurity remains, and as long as one of you fears Allah, he will remain upon goodness. And when something troubles his heart and he comes to a man and finds a cure from him—by God! It is possible that you may not find him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah that he says: There is no state more beloved to Allah Almighty than seeing His servant in prostration.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah, he says: Surely Allah gives the world to those whom He loves and to those whom He does not love, but He grants faith only to those whom He loves. When Allah loves a servant, He grants him faith. So whoever among you fears enduring hardship at night, is cowardly in striving against the enemy, and is miserly in spending wealth, then he should frequently recite: Subhan Allah, walhamdu lillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar.

Hazrat Abdullah says: Indeed, a mountain calls out to another mountain and says, "Has any person remembering Allah passed over you today?"
