Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Umar bin Jawan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Ahnaf bin Qais (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We were in Madinah when Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived. It was said: This is Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). He (may Allah be pleased with him) entered in such a state that he was wearing a yellow sheet with which he had covered his head. He (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Is Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) here? The people replied: Yes! He (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Is Hazrat Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) here? The people replied: Yes! He (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Is Hazrat Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) here? The people replied: Yes! He (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Is Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) here? The people replied: Yes! He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I ask you by oath, by Him besides whom there is no deity worthy of worship, do you know the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) which he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever buys the enclosure of camels of such-and-such tribe, Allah will forgive him. So I bought that enclosure for twenty thousand or twenty-five thousand. Then I presented myself before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Indeed, I have bought that enclosure. Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Dedicate that place as a waqf for our mosque and you will receive its reward? The narrator says: All of them unanimously said: By Allah! It is exactly as you said. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I ask you by Allah, besides whom there is no deity worthy of worship: Do you know regarding the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever buys the well of Roomah with sweet water, Allah will forgive him. So I bought that well for such-and-such amount, then I presented myself before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Indeed, I have bought it. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Dedicate it for the Muslims to drink from and you will receive its reward? The narrator says: All of them unanimously said: By Allah! It is exactly as you said. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I ask you by Allah, besides whom there is no deity, do you know the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said while looking at the faces of the people: Who is the person who will provide the equipment for these people’s journey? Allah will forgive that person. That is, in the expedition of Tabuk. So I provided equipment for all of them until they did not lack even a camel’s bridle or a rope for the camel’s foot? All of them unanimously said: By Allah! It is exactly as you said. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said three times: O Allah! Bear witness.

Hazrat Mirrah al-Bahzi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that while we were one day with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in one of the streets of Madinah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "What will be your condition during that tribulation which will break out in the corners of the earth, as if it were like the two horns of a cow?" The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! What should we do in that situation?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "It is obligatory upon you to follow that person and his group." The narrator says: So I hurried until I reached that man, then I asked: "O Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him)! This man?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "This very man." And that was Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hazrat Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the coming of a tribulation, and he described it as being very near. Then a man passed by whose head was covered with a cloth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: On that day, this man and his group will be upon guidance. So a person went after him, caught him by the shoulder, turned his face towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and asked: This man? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Yes! And that was Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hazrat Abu Qalabah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that when Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, many speakers addressed the people at the place of Ilya. Then, at the end, a companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whose name was Ka'b bin Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him), stood up and said: If I had not heard this hadith myself from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I would never have stood up. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the trial (fitnah). I think he described it as being very near, when a man whose head was covered with a cloth passed by. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: On that day, this man and his group will be upon the truth. So I followed that man, then I caught him by the shoulders and turned his face towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: This man? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. So that was Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hazrat Saeed bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Uthman is in Paradise."

Hazrat Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The most modest person in my Ummah is Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hazrat Abu Qalabah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a man from the Quraysh, who was called Thumamah, was in Sana'a when the news of the martyrdom of Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) reached him. Upon hearing this, he began to weep and continued weeping for a long time. When he became silent, he said: "Today, prophethood or the caliphate of prophethood has been taken away. Now there will be kingship and oppression. Whoever prevails over something will consume it."

Hazrat Musa bin Talha (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was the most protective of his private parts and the most observant of maintaining family ties.

Hazrat Saeed (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Indeed, Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) provided mounts for the Mujahideen in the Battle of Tabuk on nine hundred and thirty (930) camels. And he completed the number one thousand (1000) with seventy (70) horses.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Sinan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that when Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was made the Caliph, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We have left no stone unturned in selecting the most distinguished among us.

When allegiance was pledged to Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), I heard Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: "In choosing the most eminent among us, we have not fallen short in any way."

Hazrat Abu Al-Malih (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: If all the people had united upon the killing of Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), stones would have been rained down upon them just as they were rained down upon the people of Lot.

Hazrat Ubaidullah bin Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Indeed, there was a man who was called Juhjah. He snatched a stick from the hand of Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and broke it with the help of his knee, so a disease that eats away at the limb developed at that very spot.

Hazrat Ziyad bin Abi Habib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is as if I am seeing towards him that there are burning coals of fire in both of his hands, meaning the killer of Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) who killed him.

Hazrat Abu Sahla (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the freed slave of Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said during his final illness: "I wish that I had a companion with me." So Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Shall I call Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)?" She says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. I understood that he did not wish for him to be called. Then I said: "Shall I call Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. I understood that he did not wish for him to be called either. Then I said: "Shall I call Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. I understood that he did not wish for him to be called either. Then I said: "Shall I call Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him)?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes!" So I called him. When he arrived, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured for me to move away. So he came and sat by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to him for some time, and the color of Uthman kept changing. Hazrat Qais narrates that Hazrat Abu Sahla (may Allah have mercy on him) told me: When Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged in his house, he was asked: "Why do you not fight?" He replied: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took a promise from me, and I am going to be patient upon it." Hazrat Abu Sahla (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) thought that the promise was made in that very gathering.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Aamir (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Usman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Among you, the person who will benefit me the most is the one who restrains his weapon and hand from fighting.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), in the explanation of the verse of the Holy Qur'an { ہَلْ یَسْتَوِی ہُوَ وَمَنْ یَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَہُوَ عَلَی صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِیمٍ }, states that it refers to Hazrat Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hazrat Abu Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was writing the will of Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) when he (Abu Bakr) fell unconscious. So Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) quickly wrote the name of Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). When Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) regained consciousness, he asked him: Whose name did you write? He replied: Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He (Abu Bakr) said: You wrote exactly what I wanted, and I intended to instruct you to write his name. And if you had written your own name, you too were worthy of this position.

Hazrat Habib bin Abi Mulaikah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a man asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): Was he present at the Battle of Badr? He (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: No. Then he asked: Was he present at the Pledge of Ridwan? He (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: No! He asked: Did he turn his back and flee on the day when the two armies faced each other (the Battle of Uhud)? He (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Yes! The narrator says: Then that man left, so it was said to Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): Surely this man thinks that you have mentioned a fault of Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Call him back to me. So that man was brought back. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: What I have told you, did you understand it? He said: Yes! He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You asked me whether Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) participated in the Battle of Badr? So I told you he did not. Because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Surely Uthman is engaged in Your and Your Messenger’s need. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) allotted him a share in the spoils of war. And you asked me whether Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was present at the Pledge of Ridwan? So I told you he was not. Because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to the polytheists so that they might make peace with us, but they refused. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took the pledge on his behalf. And he said: O Allah! Surely Uthman is engaged in Your and Your Messenger’s need. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed one of his hands over the other and took the pledge on his behalf. And you asked me whether Hazrat Uthman turned his back and fled on the day when the two armies faced each other? So I told you: Yes! And indeed Allah, Lord of Might and Majesty, has said: (Translation: Surely those of you who turned their backs on the day when the two armies met, it was only Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned. But Allah has forgiven them.) So go and do whatever you wish against me.

Hazrat Sa’d bin Ubaidah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a man asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): so he (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned his good deeds; then he said: Perhaps you have a bad opinion about him? The man said: Yes! He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May Allah abase your nose with dust.

Hazrat Hilal bin Abi Humaid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Ukeem (may Allah have mercy on him) said: After the martyrdom of Hazrat Uthman, I will never assist in the killing of a caliph. The narrator says that he was asked: Did you assist in his killing? He replied: Certainly, I assisted in his blood to the extent that I used to enumerate his faults.

Yahya (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I heard Abdullah bin Amir (may Allah have mercy on him) saying that when people began to have differing opinions regarding the criticism and reproach against Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), my father stood up and performed the night prayer, then he went to sleep. The narrator says: Then it was said to him: Stand up and ask Allah to protect you from this tribulation just as He protected His righteous servants from it. The narrator says that he stood up, then he became ill. After that, he was not seen outside until he passed away.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Qais (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Nu’man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Hazrat Mu’awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him with a letter to Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), so he gave her the letter. Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Shall I not narrate to you a hadith which I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? I said: Why not! Please do. She (may Allah be pleased with her) said: One day, Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) and I were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: I wish there was a man with us who would talk to us. I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Should I not send for Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) so that he may come and talk with us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. Then Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Should I not send for Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) so that he may come and talk with us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. She (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called a man and, moving away from us, whispered to him, and then he left. Then Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face towards him. Then I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: O Uthman, perhaps Allah will clothe you with a shirt, so if some people want you to take it off, do not ever take it off. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times. The narrator says: I asked, O Mother of the Believers! Why did you not narrate this hadith before? She (may Allah be pleased with her) said: It was made to be forgotten by me, as if I had never heard it.

Hazrat Iyas bin Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that his father, Hazrat Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him), said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took the pledge of allegiance for Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) by placing his right hand over his other hand. So the people said: Abu Abdullah is indeed fortunate that he is performing tawaf of the House of Allah in peace. Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Even if he were to stay for so many and so many years, he would not perform tawaf until I had performed tawaf.

Hazrat Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Indeed, you people find fault with Hazrat Uthman for certain things. If Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had done these actions, you would never have found fault with him.

Hazrat Umm Hilal bint Waqi’ reports that the wife of Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was dozing, and when he woke up, he said: Surely my people will kill me. So I said: Never, O Commander of the Faithful! Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in a dream. The narrator says that he said: Tonight you will break your fast with us, or he said: You will break your fast with us tonight.

Hazrat Abu Habibah, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I entered the house of Hazrat Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, when the rebels had surrounded his house. Then I heard Hazrat Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, saying that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Soon after me, you will encounter tribulation and discord. The narrator says: A questioner asked: Do you command us to do anything? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: It is obligatory upon you to obey the leader and his companions. And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, placed his hand on the shoulder of Hazrat Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him.

Hazrat A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Abu Salih (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to mention the martyrdom of Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), he would begin to weep. It is as if I can still hear the sound of his sobbing.

Hazrat Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that when Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed, at that time Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "You people have abandoned him just as filth is abandoned on a clean garment. Then you brought him close and slaughtered him as a ram is slaughtered. Why did this not happen before?" So Hazrat Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said to her: "This happened because of your action, that you wrote letters to the people ordering them to rebel!" The narrator says: Upon this, Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "No! By the One in whom all believers have faith and with whom the disbelievers disbelieved, I have not written anything with black (ink) on white (paper) until I sat in my place." Imam A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Thus, their opinion was that all this was written on her tongue.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Hatib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I heard Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) delivering this sermon, in which he recited this verse: (Indeed, those for whom the good end has already been decreed from Us, they will be kept far away from it). He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was among those people.

Hazrat Uqbah bin Aws as-Sadoosi, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: There will be twelve (12) caliphs in this Ummah. Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, you people have already confirmed his name. And Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who will be very trustworthy. You people have also confirmed his name. And Uthman bin Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, the possessor of two lights, who was entrusted with two responsibilities of mercy. And he was unjustly killed. You people have also confirmed his name.

Hazrat Majma’ (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah have mercy on him) went to Hajjaj bin Yusuf. Hajjaj said to his companions: If you want to see a person who reviles Amir al-Mu’minin Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), then this person, Abdur Rahman, is before you—look at him. Upon this, Hazrat Abdur Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: O Amir! I seek Allah’s refuge from reviling Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Indeed, this blessed verse found in the Book of Allah has prevented and protected me from this act. Allah has said: (translation: And (the spoils of war are) for the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure, and supporting Allah and His Messenger. Those are the truthful.) Hazrat Uthman was among those people.

Hazrat Yazid bin Amr al-Ma’asari, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates that Hazrat Abu Thawr al-Fahmi, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Abdur Rahman bin ‘Udays, who was among those who pledged allegiance under the tree, came to the rebels and ascended the pulpit. After praising and glorifying Allah, he mentioned Hazrat Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him. Hazrat Abu Thawr, may Allah have mercy on him, says: During the siege, I went to Hazrat Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, and said, “So-and-so is saying such-and-such about you.” Hazrat Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, replied: “How can such a thing be? When I have stored up ten special virtues with Allah. They are: I am the fourth person to embrace Islam. And indeed, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married me to one of his daughters, then married me to another of his daughters. And indeed, I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah with this right hand of mine, and never did I touch my private parts with it thereafter. Nor did I ever engage in romantic affairs. Nor did I ever desire or long for such things. And I never drank wine, neither in the days of ignorance nor in Islam. And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Who will buy this portion of the road and expand the mosque with it, for him will be a house in Paradise in exchange?’ So I bought that place and expanded the mosque.”

Hazrat Mas'ar, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates that Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Mulhan, may Allah have mercy on him, said: When Hazrat Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, was mentioned in the presence of Hazrat Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, and Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, he (Ibn Umar) said: What is your opinion if you have two camels, one of which is strong and the other is weak, would you kill the weak camel?

Hazrat Mas'ar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Hazrat Abu Sulaiman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about Hazrat Uthman (may Allah have mercy on him). The narrator says that he (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Consider him the best among us, or he said: We used to consider him the best and most virtuous among ourselves.

Hazrat Kulthum says that Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: I do not like that I should shoot even a single arrow at Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) with the intention of killing him, even if in return I were to receive gold equal to the mountain of Uhud.

Hazrat Hassan bin Atiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): May Allah forgive your sins which you have committed earlier and which you will commit later, and those which you have committed in secret and those which you have committed openly, and those which you have concealed and those which you have revealed, and whatever you will do until the Day of Judgment.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Hatib, may Allah have mercy on him, narrates that when Hazrat Uthman, may Allah have mercy on him, was mentioned, Hazrat Hasan bin Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Commander of the Faithful will come to you soon, and he himself will tell you about him. The narrator says: Then Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, arrived and said: Hazrat Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, was among those people. Then he recited this verse in full. Translation: Those people remained steadfast in faith and did good deeds, then abstained from forbidden things and accepted the commands of Allah, then adopted piety and did good deeds. And Allah loves those who do good deeds.

Hazrat Nafi’ bin Harith (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered one of the gardens of Madinah and said to me: “Close the door for me.” Then he (peace be upon him) came and sat on the edge built around the well and let his legs hang into the well. Then the door was knocked, so I asked: “Who is it?” He said: “Abu Bakr.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon you)! It is Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).” So he (peace be upon him) said: “Let him in and give him glad tidings of Paradise.” So he came and sat on the edge of the well with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he (may Allah be pleased with him) also let his legs hang into the well. Then the door was knocked. I asked: “Who is it?” He said: “Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).” I said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon you)! It is Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).” So he (peace be upon him) said: “Let him in and give him glad tidings of Paradise.” The narrator says: I gave him permission to enter and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. So he came and sat on the edge of the well with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he (may Allah be pleased with him) also let his legs hang into the well. Then the door was knocked. I asked: “Who is it?” He said: “Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).” I said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon you)! It is Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).” He (peace be upon him) said: “Let him in and give him glad tidings of Paradise—with a trial.” The narrator says: I gave him permission to enter and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. So he entered and sat on the edge of the well with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and let his legs hang into the well.

Hazrat Sufyan bin Husain (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) offered his daughter's hand in marriage to Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shall I not guide you to someone better than Uthman? And shall I not guide Uthman to a woman better than this woman? The narrator says: Thus, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself married the daughter of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and arranged the marriage of Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) to his own daughter.
