Sayyidah Ra'itah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), was a skilled craftswoman; she would sell some of her handiwork and give in charity. One day she said to Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): "You and your children have kept me occupied, so while I am with you I am not able to give anything in charity." At this he said: "Would you not like to have a double reward?" So the two of them asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have the reward of what you have spent on them."

She said: "By Allah, you and your children have kept me from giving charity, so while I am with you I am not able to give anything in charity." He said: "If there is no reward for you in it, I would not like you to do it." So Sayyidah Ra'itah (may Allah be pleased with her) and her husband Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a woman with a craft by which I earn, and neither I, nor my husband, nor my children have anything; they keep me busy so that I do not give charity." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have a reward in that for what you have spent on them."
