It is narrated from Sayyidah al-Rubayyi' bint Mu'awwidh (may Allah be pleased with her) that she heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) relate about the wife of Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that there had been some discord between her and her husband, and he was a harsh man without gentleness. So she came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and spoke to him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then she sent for Thabit bin Qays, and the two of them spoke in his (peace and blessings be upon him) presence as much as Allah willed. Then Thabit accepted a ransom from her, and she freed herself from him by khul'. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her to observe a waiting period ('iddah) of one menstrual cycle.
