حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَهْدِيٍّ الْأَخْمِيمِيُّ الْمِصْرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمِّي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، ثنا عَنْبَسَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ «تَزَوَّجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ جَحْشٍ وَكَانَتْ قَبْلَهُ تَحْتَ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ»
Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf narrates from his father: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), and before him she had been married to Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him).
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ الْحَلَبِيُّ، ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَبِي مَنِيعٍ الرُّصَافِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: «تَزَوَّجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ جَحْشِ بْنِ رِئَابِ بْنِ أَسَدِ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ، وَأُمُّهَا أُمَيْمَةُ بِنْتُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ هَاشِمٍ عَمَّةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ» قَالَ: «وَهِيَ أَوَّلُ نِسَاءِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تُوُفِّيَتْ»
Al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married Zaynab bint Jahsh bin Ri'ab bin Asad bin Khuzaymah (may Allah be pleased with her), and her mother was Umaymah bint Abd al-Muttalib bin Hashim, the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). And she was the first of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to pass away.
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ الْبَرْقِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، ثنا زِيَادٌ الْبَكَّائِيُّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: «تُوُفِّيَتْ زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ جَحْشٍ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَنَةَ عِشْرِينَ»
Muhammad bin Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), passed away in the year 20 AH.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ، قَالَ: «تُوُفِّيَتْ زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ جَحْشٍ فِي خِلَافَةِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا»
Ibn al-Mundhir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away during the caliphate of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
حَدَّثَنَا سَهْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى شِيرانُ الرَّامَهُرْمُزِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي صَفْوَانَ الثَّقَفِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو قُتَيْبَةَ، ثنا عِيسَى بْنُ طَهْمَانَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ، يَقُولُ: كَانَتْ زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ جَحْشٍ تَفْخَرُ عَلَى نِسَاءِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَقُولُ: «زَوَّجَكُنَّ آبَاؤُكُنَّ وَاللهُ أَنْكَحَنِي مِنَ السَّمَاءِ»
Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) used to take pride over the other wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "Your fathers married you off, but Allah married me off from above the heavens."
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْبَابْلُتِّيُّ، ثنا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ رَاشِدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ: دَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْزِلَهُ وَمَعَهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فَإِذَا هُوَ زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ جَحْشٍ تُصَلِّي وَهِيَ فِي صَلَاتِهَا تَدْعُو، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّهَا لَأَوَّاهَةٌ»
Rashid bin Sa'd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered his house, and Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him, and they saw Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) praying and supplicating in her prayer. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She is one who sighs much in humble entreaty (awwahah)."
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثنا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ أَبِي السَّرِيِّ الْعَسْقَلَانِيُّ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَعْيَنَ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، ثنا حَفْصُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، عَنِ الْكُمَيْتِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ الْأَسَدِيِّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مَذْكُورٌ، مَوْلَى زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ، عَنْ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ، قَالَتْ: خَطَبَنِي عِدَّةٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ، فَأَرْسَلْتُ أُخْتِي حَمْنَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَسْتَشِيرُهُ، فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أَيْنَ هِيَ مِمَّنْ يُعَلِّمُهَا كِتَابَ رَبِّهَا وَسُنَّةَ نَبِيِّهَا؟» قَالَتْ: وَمَنْ هُوَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: «زَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ؟» قَالَ: فَغَضِبَتْ حَمْنَةُ غَضَبًا شَدِيدًا، وَقَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَتُزَوِّجُ بِنْتَ عَمَّتِكَ مَوْلَاكَ؟ قَالَتْ: جَاءَتْنِي فَأَعْلَمَتْنِي فَغَضِبْتُ أَشَدَّ مِنْ غَضَبِهَا، وَقُلْتُ أَشَدَّ مِنْ قَوْلِهَا، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ: {وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ وَلَا مُؤْمِنَةٍ إِذَا قَضَى اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَمْرًا أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُمُ الْخِيَرَةُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِمْ} [الأحزاب: ٣٦] ، قَالَتْ: فَأَرْسَلْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَقُلْتُ: إِنِّي اسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ وَأُطِيعُ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ، افْعَلْ مَا رَأَيْتَ، فَزَوَّجْنِي زَيْدًا، وَكُنْتُ أَرْثِي عَلَيْهِ، فَشَكَانِي إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَعَاتَبَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ثُمَّ عُدْتُ فَأَخَذْتُهُ بِلِسَانِي، فَشَكَانِي إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ وَاتَّقِ اللهَ» فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَنَا أُطَلِّقُهَا، قَالَتْ: فَطَلَّقَنِي، فَلَمَّا انْقَضَتْ عِدَّتِي لَمْ أَعْلَمْ إِلَّا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ دَخَلَ عَلِيَّ بِبَيْتِي وَأَنَا مَكْشُوفَةُ الشَّعْرِ، فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّهُ أَمَرٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بِلَا خِطْبَةٍ وَلَا إِشْهَادٍ؟ فَقَالَ: «اللهُ الْمُزَوِّجُ وَجِبْرِيلُ الشَّاهِدُ»
Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Several men of Quraysh proposed marriage to me, so I sent my sister Hamnah to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to seek his advice. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "What does she think of one who would teach her the Book of her Lord and the Sunnah of her Prophet?" She said: O Messenger of Allah! Who is he? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Zayd bin Harithah." Hamnah became extremely angry and said: O Messenger of Allah! Will you marry your paternal aunt's daughter to your freed slave? She came to me and told me, and I became even angrier than she was, and I said something even harsher than she had said. Then Allah revealed this verse: "It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should have any choice in their affair." [Surah al-Ahzab: 36] So I sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I seek forgiveness from Allah and I obey Allah and His Messenger; do whatever you see fit. So he married me to Zayd. I used to complain about him, and he complained about me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reproached me. Then I went back to hurting him with my tongue, and he again complained about me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep your wife to yourself and fear Allah." He said: O Messenger of Allah! I am divorcing her. So he divorced me. When my waiting period ('iddah) ended, I suddenly found that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had come in to me in my house while my hair was uncovered, and I thought: This is a matter from the heavens. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Without a proposal and without witnesses? He said: "Allah is the one who gives in marriage, and Jibril is the witness."
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ: لَمَّا انْقَضَتْ عِدَّةُ زَيْنَبَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِزَيْدٍ: «اذْكُرْهَا عَلِيَّ» قَالَ زَيْدٌ: فَانْطَلَقْتُ فَقُلْتُ: يَا زَيْنَبُ، أَبْشِرِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَذْكُرُكِ، فَقَالَتْ: مَا أَنَا بِصَانِعَةٍ شَيْئًا حَتَّى أُؤَامِرَ رَبِّي، فَقَامَتْ إِلَى مَسْجِدِهَا ثُمَّ نَزَلَ الْقُرْآنُ، وَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا بِلَا إِذْنٍ
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Zaynab's (may Allah be pleased with her) waiting period ended, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him): "Mention marriage to her on my behalf." Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So I went and said: O Zaynab! Rejoice, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent me to propose to you. She said: I will not do anything until I consult my Lord. So she went to her place of prayer; then the Qur'an was revealed, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and entered upon her without permission.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الصَّائِغُ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: " لَوْ كَتَمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَيْئًا مِنَ الْوَحْيِ لَكَتَمَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ: {وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللهُ مُبْدِيهِ وَتَخْشَى النَّاسَ وَاللهُ أَحَقُّ أَنْ تَخْشَاهُ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى زَيْدٌ مِنْهَا وَطَرًا زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] "
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "If the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had concealed anything of the revelation, he would have concealed this verse: 'And you concealed within yourself what Allah was to disclose, and you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him. So when Zayd had accomplished his need of her, We married her to you.'" [Surah al-Ahzab: 37]
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَالِمٍ الرَّازِيُّ، ثنا سَهْلُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ، عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: " لَوْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَتَمَ شَيْئًا مِنْ كِتَابِ اللهِ كَتَمَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ: {وَإِذْ تَقُولُ لِلَّذِي أَنْعَمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {وَطَرًا زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] "
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "If the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had concealed anything of the Book of Allah, he would have concealed this verse: 'And when you said to the one on whom Allah had bestowed favour and on whom you had bestowed favour'" up to His words: 'We married her to you.' [Surah al-Ahzab: 37]
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ حِسَابٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: {وَإِذْ تَقُولُ لِلَّذِي أَنْعَمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] قَالَ: «أَنْعَمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ بِالْإِسْلَامِ، وَأَنْعَمَ عَلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْعِتْقِ» {أَمْسَكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] ، قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: جَاءَ زَيْدٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ زَيْنَبَ اشْتَدَّ عَلِيَّ لِسَانُهَا، وَإِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُطَلِّقُهَا، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «اتَّقِ اللهَ وَأَمْسَكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ» وَالنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يُطَلِّقَهَا وَخَشِيَ قَالَةَ النَّاسِ إِنْ أَمَرَهُ بِطَلَاقِهَا، فَأَنْزَلَ: {وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللهُ مُبْدِيهِ وَتَخْشَى النَّاسَ وَاللهُ أَحَقُّ أَنْ تَخْشَاهُ فَلَمَّا قَضَى زَيْدٌ مِنْهَا وَطَرًا} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] قَالَ: لَمَّا طَلَّقَهَا زَيْدٌ {زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا} [الأحزاب: ٣٧]
Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said concerning the verse "And when you said to the one on whom Allah had bestowed favour and on whom you had bestowed favour" [al-Ahzab: 37]: "Allah favoured him with Islam, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) favoured him by freeing him." Concerning "Keep your wife to yourself" [al-Ahzab: 37], Qatadah said: Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Zaynab's tongue has become harsh towards me, and I want to divorce her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fear Allah and keep your wife to yourself." Yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wished in his heart that he would divorce her, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) feared what people would say if he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to divorce her. So Allah revealed: "And you concealed within yourself what Allah was to disclose, and you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him. So when Zayd had accomplished his need of her" - that is, when Zayd divorced her - "We married her to you." [al-Ahzab: 37]
حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، ثنا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ النَّرْسِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: {وَإِذْ تَقُولُ لِلَّذِي أَنْعَمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] «وَهُوَ زَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ أَنْعَمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ بِالْإِسْلَامِ، وَأَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِ أَعْتَقَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ» ، {أَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ وَاتَّقِ اللهَ وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللهُ مُبْدِيهِ وَتَخْشَى النَّاسَ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] ، قَالَ: «كَانَ يُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِهِ وَدَّ أَنَّهُ طَلَّقَهَا» ، قَالَ: قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: " مَا أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ آيَةٌ أَشَدَّ مِنْهَا قَوْلُهُ: {وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] وَلَوْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَاتِمًا شَيْئًا مِنَ الْوَحْيِ لَكَتَمَهَا ": {وَتَخْشَى النَّاسَ وَاللهُ أَحَقُّ أَنْ تَخْشَاهُ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] قَالَ: «خَشِيَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَةَ النَّاسِ» {فَلَمَّا قَضَى زَيْدٌ مِنْهَا وَطَرًا} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] «لَمَّا طَلَّقَهَا زَيْدٌ» {زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] قَالَ: فَكَانَتْ زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ جَحْشٍ تَفْخَرُ عَلَى نِسَاءِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَقُولُ: «أَمَا أَنْتُنَّ فَزَوَّجَكُنَّ آبَاؤُكُنَّ، وَأَمَّا أَنَا فَزَوَّجْنِي ذُو الْعَرْشِ» {وَاتَّقِ اللهَ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] ، قَالَ: جَعَلَ يَقُولُ: يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ إِنَّهَا قَدِ اشْتَدَّ عَلِيَّ خُلُقُهَا وَإِنِّي مُطْلَقٌ هَذِهِ الْمَرْأَةَ فَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا قَالَ زَيْدٌ ذَلِكَ قَالَ: «أَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ وَاتَّقِ اللهَ»
Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said concerning the verse "And when you said to the one on whom Allah had bestowed favour and on whom you had bestowed favour" [al-Ahzab: 37] - and he is Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) - "Allah favoured him with Islam, and you favoured him by freeing him." "Keep your wife to yourself, and fear Allah, and you concealed within yourself what Allah was to disclose, and you feared the people" [al-Ahzab: 37]; he said: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) concealed within himself the wish that Zayd would divorce her." Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "No verse was revealed to him (peace and blessings be upon him) harder than this one: 'And you concealed within yourself', and if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were to conceal anything of the revelation, he would have concealed this." "And you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him" [al-Ahzab: 37]; he said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) feared what people would say." "So when Zayd had accomplished his need of her" [al-Ahzab: 37] - that is, when Zayd divorced her - "We married her to you." [al-Ahzab: 37] He said: So Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) used to take pride over the other wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "As for you, your fathers married you off, but as for me, the Lord of the Throne married me off." "And fear Allah" [al-Ahzab: 37]; he said: Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) would say: O Prophet of Allah! Her manner has become harsh towards me, and I am going to divorce this woman. And whenever Zayd said that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: "Keep your wife to yourself and fear Allah."
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَمْزَةَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْجُمَاهِرِ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: {وَإِذْ تَقُولُ لِلَّذِي أَنْعَمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] «بِالْإِسْلَامِ» {وَأَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] «أَنْ أَعْتَقْتَهُ» {أَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] «وَهُوَ زَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ»
Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said concerning the verse "And when you said to the one on whom Allah had bestowed favour" [al-Ahzab: 37], meaning with Islam, "and on whom you had bestowed favour", meaning by freeing him, "Keep your wife to yourself" [al-Ahzab: 37] - and he is Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him).
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا عَارِمٌ أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ: " نَزَلَتْ فِي زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ: {وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللهُ مُبْدِيهِ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] "
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This verse was revealed concerning Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her): "And you concealed within yourself what Allah was to disclose." [Surah al-Ahzab: 37]
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: {وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللهُ مُبْدِيهِ} [الأحزاب: ٣٧] «فِي نَفْسِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا فِيهَا مِنْ حُبِّهِ طَلَاقَهُ إِيَّاهَا، وَنِكَاحَهُ إِيَّاهَا، فَأَبَى اللهُ إِلَّا أَنْ يُخْبِرَ بِالَّذِي أَخْفَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي نَفْسِهِ»
Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) said concerning the verse "And you concealed within yourself what Allah was to disclose" [al-Ahzab: 37]: "In the heart of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was his wish that Zayd would divorce her and that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would marry her, so Allah willed nothing but to disclose what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had concealed within himself."
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَارِمٌ أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ الْقَاضِي، ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ، وَأَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الزَّهْرَانِيُّ، قَالُوا: ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، قَالَ: «مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوَلَمَ عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ مِنْ نِسَائِهِ مَا أَوْلَمَ عَلَى زَيْنَبَ فَإِنَّهُ ذَبَحَ شَاةً»
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) give a wedding feast (walimah) for any of his wives like the one he gave for Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), for he (peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered a sheep.
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: {سُنَّةَ اللهِ فِي الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِنْ قَبْلُ} [الأحزاب: ٣٨] ، قَالَ: «دَاوُدُ وَالْمَرْأَةُ الَّتِي نَكَحَ وَزَوْجُهَا اسْمُهَا الْيَسِيعُ فَذَلِكَ سَنَةٌ فِي مُحَمَّدٍ وَزَيْنَبَ»
Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) said concerning the verse "The way of Allah with those who passed away before" [al-Ahzab: 38]: "Dawud (peace be upon him) and the woman he married, and her husband - her name was al-Yasi' - so that is the same way in the case of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her)."
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، ثنا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: {وَكَانَ أَمْرُ اللهِ قَدَرًا مَقْدُورًا} [الأحزاب: ٣٨] «كَذَلِكَ مِنْ سُنَّتِهِ فِي دَاوُدَ وَالْمَرْأَةِ، وَالنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَزَيْنَبَ»
Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) said concerning the verse "And the command of Allah is a decree determined" [al-Ahzab: 38]: "Likewise this was Allah's way in the case of Dawud (peace be upon him) and the woman, and also in the case of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her)."
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْحُلْوَانِيُّ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ عَثْمَةَ، حَدَّثَنِي مُوسَى بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْمُنِيبِ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي حَثْمَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَاءَ بَيْتَ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ، فَأَذِنَتْ لَهُ زَيْنَبَ وَلَا خِمَارَ عَلَيْهَا، فَأَلْقَتْ كُمَّ دِرْعِهَا عَلَى رَأْسِهَا، فَسَأَلَهَا عَنْ زَيْدٍ، فَقَالَتْ: ذَهَبَ قَرِيبًا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَهُ هَمْهَمَةٌ، قَالَتْ زَيْنَبُ: فَاتَّبَعْتُهُ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: «تَبَارَكَ مُصَرِّفُ الْقُلُوبِ» فَمَا زَالَ يَقُولُهَا حَتَّى تَغَيَّبَ
Abu Bakr bin Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the house of Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked permission to enter. Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) gave him (peace and blessings be upon him) permission while she had no head-covering on, so she threw the sleeve of her shirt over her head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked her about Zayd, and she said: O Messenger of Allah! He has only just gone. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) got up, murmuring something under his breath. Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: So I followed him (peace and blessings be upon him) and heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Blessed is the Turner of hearts." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying it until he (peace and blessings be upon him) was out of sight.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَسَدٍ الْبَجَلِيُّ، ثنا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ عَوْنٍ، عَنِ الْمُعَلَّى بْنِ عُرْفَانَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جَحْشٍ، قَالَ: افْتَخَرَتْ عَائِشَةُ وَزَيْنَبُ، فَقَالَتْ زَيْنَبُ: «أَنَا الَّذِي زَوَّجَنِي اللهُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ» ، وَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: «أَنَا الَّذِي نَزَلَ عُذْرِي حِينَ حَمَلَنِي صَفْوَانُ بْنُ الْمُعَطَّلِ» ، فَقَالَتْ لَهَا زَيْنَبُ: «أَيُّ شَيْءٍ قُلْتِ حِينَ رَكِبْتِ؟» قَالَتْ: قُلْتُ: «حَسْبِيَ اللهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ» ، قَالَتْ: «قُلْتِ كَلِمَةَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ»
Muhammad bin Jahsh said: Sayyidah Aishah and Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with them both) vied with each other in pride. Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I am the one whom Allah married off from above the heavens." And Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "I am the one whose vindication was revealed when Safwan bin al-Mu'attal (may Allah be pleased with him) gave me a ride." Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) asked her: "What did you say when you mounted?" She said: I said: "Hasbiyallahu wa ni'mal-wakil (Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs)." Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "You said the words of the believers."
حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، ثنا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ النَّرْسِيُّ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، فِي قَوْلِهِ: {وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ وَلَا مُؤْمِنَةٍ إِذَا قَضَى اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَمْرًا أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُمُ الْخِيَرَةُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِمْ وَمَنْ يَعْصِ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ ضَلَّالًا مُبِينًا} [الأحزاب: ٣٦] قَالَ: نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ فِي زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ وَكَانَتْ بِنْتَ عَمَّةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " فَخَطَبَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَرَضِيَتْ وَظَنَّتْ أَنَّهُ يَخْطُبُهَا عَلَى نَفْسِهِ، فَلَمَّا عَلِمَتْ أَنَّهُ يَخْطُبُهَا عَلَى زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ أَبَتْ وَأَنْكَرَتْ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ: {وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ وَلَا مُؤْمِنَةٍ} [الأحزاب: ٣٦] " الْآيَةُ
Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said concerning the verse "It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should have any choice in their affair; and whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error" [al-Ahzab: 36]: This verse was revealed concerning Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), and she was the daughter of the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) proposed to her, and she was pleased, thinking that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was proposing for himself. But when she learned that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was proposing on behalf of Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him), she refused and disapproved. So Allah revealed: "It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should have any choice in their affair; and whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error."
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ، قَالَ: ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ حِسَابٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ ثَوْرٍ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ: " خَطَبَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ زَيْنَبَ وَهِيَ بِنْتُ عَمَّتِهِ وَهُوَ يُرِيدُهَا لِزَيْدٍ فَظَنَّتْ أَنَّهُ يُرِيدُهَا لِنَفْسِهِ، فَلَمَّا عَلِمَتْ أَنَّهُ يُرِيدُهَا لِزَيْدٍ أَبَتْ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ: {وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ وَلَا مُؤْمِنَةٍ إِذَا قَضَى اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَمْرًا أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُمُ الْخِيَرَةُ مِنْ أَمْرِهُمْ} [الأحزاب: ٣٦] فَرَضِيَتْ وَسَلَّمَتْ "
Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proposed to Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the daughter of his paternal aunt, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted her for Zayd. She thought that he (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted her for himself, and when she learned that he (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted her for Zayd, she refused. So Allah revealed: "It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should have any choice in their affair" [al-Ahzab: 36]. Then she was pleased and submitted.
