Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married one of his wives - meaning Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) - and Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) prepared hays, then put it in a vessel. In those days the people were in severe hardship. She said: Take this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), convey my greetings of salam to him, and tell him that this is a small (gift). So I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Umm Sulaym has sent this to you; she conveys her salam to you and says: O Messenger of Allah! This is a little from us for you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at it and said: "Put it down." So I put it in a corner of the house. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Go and invite so-and-so, so-and-so and so-and-so" - and he (peace and blessings be upon him) named many men - "and any of the Muslims you meet." So I invited those he (peace and blessings be upon him) had named for me and whichever Muslims I met. When I came back, the house was full, and the platform (suffah) and the room as well - we asked Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): How many were they? He said: About three hundred - Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called for the vessel, so I brought it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on it, said Bismillah and supplicated, then said: "Form circles of ten by ten, and let each person eat from what is in front of him." So they began forming circles of ten by ten, saying Bismillah and eating, and getting up; whenever one group finished, they stood and others came and took their place, until all of them had eaten. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Lift it up." And I do not know whether there was more when I put it down or when I lifted it up. Some groups of people remained in the house of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) talking, and they prolonged the conversation, so they became a burden on the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most modest of all people, and they did not realise that they had become a burden on the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) - that would have been hard on them - so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and left them. When they saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had returned, they thought that they had become a burden on him (peace and blessings be upon him), so they hurried to the door and went out. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, let down the curtain, went inside and stayed a little while. Then revelation came down upon him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out reciting: "O you who believe! Do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you" [al-Ahzab: 53] to the end of the verses. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So I am the one with the most recent knowledge of these verses; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited them to me.

Thabit al-Bunani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I said to Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): Tell me the most amazing thing you saw from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: When the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), my mother said to me: O Anas! The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has woken up as a bridegroom, and I do not think he (peace and blessings be upon him) has anything for his morning meal, so bring that skin of ghee and dates the amount of a mudd. Then she prepared hays for him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Anas! Take this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his wife. When I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a stone vessel containing that hays, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Put it in a corner of the house, and go and invite Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali and a few others of his companions for me, then invite for me the people of the mosque and whoever you see on the road." I began to marvel at how little food there was and how many people I was ordered to invite, but I did not like to disobey him (peace and blessings be upon him), until the house and the room were full. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Anas! Do you see anyone left?" I said: No, O Prophet of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring that vessel." So I brought that vessel and placed it in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) dipped three fingers into the vessel, and the vessel began to swell and rise. They began eating and going out, until when all of them had finished, about as much as I had brought remained in the vessel. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Place it in front of Zaynab." So I went out and covered the door for them with palm branches. Thabit said: We asked: O Abu Hamzah! How many do you think were those who ate from that vessel? He said: I think they were seventy-one or seventy-two.

Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave a wedding feast (walimah) of bread and meat for Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her).

Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am the most knowledgeable of people about this verse. When Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) was brought as a bride to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), she was with him (peace and blessings be upon him) in the house, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) prepared food. The people came, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would go out while the people stayed in their places, and he would come back while the people were still sitting. So Allah revealed: "O you who believe! Do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you for a meal, without waiting for it to be cooked; but when you are invited, then enter, and when you have eaten, disperse, and do not linger for conversation. Indeed, that troubles the Prophet, and he is shy of you, but Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask his wives for anything, ask them from behind a screen" [al-Ahzab: 53]. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) let down the screen and the people stood up.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am the most knowledgeable of all people about the ruling of hijab; Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) used to ask me about it. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up as the bridegroom of Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her); he (peace and blessings be upon him) had married her in Madinah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) invited the people to a meal after the day had advanced. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained seated, and some men stayed sitting with him (peace and blessings be upon him) after the people had left, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and walked, and I walked with him (peace and blessings be upon him), until he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the door of Sayyidah Aishah's (may Allah be pleased with her) room. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) thought that they had gone out, so he returned and I returned with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and we found that they had only just got up. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) let down a curtain between me and himself, and the verse of hijab was revealed.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the verse of hijab was revealed, I was the most knowledgeable of people about it. Then the narrator narrated a hadith similar to the narration of Salih bin Kaysan.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a woman who attracted him (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) and fulfilled his need with her. Then he came out and said: "A woman comes forward in the form of a devil and turns away in the form of a devil, so when any of you experiences that, let him go to his wife, for that will repel what is in his heart."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his wives: "The first of you to join me will be the one with the longest hand." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: So whenever we gathered after the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we would stretch our hands against the wall to measure their length. We kept doing that until Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh bin Ri'ab (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away. She was short in stature and was not the one with the longest hand among us, so we realised that by the length of the hand the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant charity. She was a skilled woman who worked with her hands and gave its proceeds in charity in the path of Allah.

Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that he prayed the funeral prayer over Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). She was the first of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to die. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would have liked to lower her into her grave himself, so he sent word to the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Who should lower her into her grave? They said: Whoever used to see her during her lifetime should lower her into her grave.
