Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married one of his wives - meaning Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) - and Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) prepared hays, then put it in a vessel. In those days the people were in severe hardship. She said: Take this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), convey my greetings of salam to him, and tell him that this is a small (gift). So I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Umm Sulaym has sent this to you; she conveys her salam to you and says: O Messenger of Allah! This is a little from us for you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at it and said: "Put it down." So I put it in a corner of the house. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Go and invite so-and-so, so-and-so and so-and-so" - and he (peace and blessings be upon him) named many men - "and any of the Muslims you meet." So I invited those he (peace and blessings be upon him) had named for me and whichever Muslims I met. When I came back, the house was full, and the platform (suffah) and the room as well - we asked Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): How many were they? He said: About three hundred - Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called for the vessel, so I brought it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on it, said Bismillah and supplicated, then said: "Form circles of ten by ten, and let each person eat from what is in front of him." So they began forming circles of ten by ten, saying Bismillah and eating, and getting up; whenever one group finished, they stood and others came and took their place, until all of them had eaten. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Lift it up." And I do not know whether there was more when I put it down or when I lifted it up. Some groups of people remained in the house of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) talking, and they prolonged the conversation, so they became a burden on the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most modest of all people, and they did not realise that they had become a burden on the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) - that would have been hard on them - so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and left them. When they saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had returned, they thought that they had become a burden on him (peace and blessings be upon him), so they hurried to the door and went out. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, let down the curtain, went inside and stayed a little while. Then revelation came down upon him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out reciting: "O you who believe! Do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you" [al-Ahzab: 53] to the end of the verses. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: So I am the one with the most recent knowledge of these verses; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited them to me.
