It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Muttalib bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) came in to him in a state of anger and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what treatment do we receive from Quraysh? When they meet one another, they meet with cheerful faces, and when they meet us, they treat us otherwise." The narrator said: Hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry until his face turned red, then he said: "Faith does not enter the heart of a man until he loves you for the sake of Allah and His Messenger. A man's uncle is like his father."

He said: "They meet one another with cheerful faces, but when they meet us, they treat us otherwise." Hearing this, he (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry until the vein between his eyes swelled. Then, when his anger subsided, he said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, faith does not enter the heart of a man until he loves you for the sake of Allah and His Messenger." It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Muttalib bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him): Some people from the Ansar came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we hear harsh words from some people; one of them says: 'The example of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is only like a date palm that has grown on a rubbish heap.'" Hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said: "O people, who am I?" They said: "You are the Messenger of Allah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib" - the narrator said: We had never heard him trace his lineage like this before - "Indeed, Allah created His creation and placed me among the best of His creation. Then He divided them into two groups and placed me in the better group. Then He made them into tribes and placed me in the best of their tribes. Then He made them into households and placed me in the best household. So I am the best of you in household and the best of you in person."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Muttalib bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Banu Abd al-Muttalib gathered and said: "Why do you not ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to give you the responsibility that he has given to such-and-such a tribe, that is, to appoint you to collect the zakah?" So they met Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and spoke to him about it, and he said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and His Messenger have refused this for you, that you should be given the dirt of people's hands" - or he said: "the washings of people's hands." Abd al-Muttalib (bin Rabi'ah) said to his father: "Send me." And Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) sent his son al-Fadl. We came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and went in, and he met each one of us privately. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What are you two keeping hidden in your hearts?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, your people and your cousins have sent us so that you may appoint them to collect the zakah just as you have appointed other people." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah and His Messenger have refused this for you, that you should eat the dirt" - or he said: "the washings - of people's hands."

We set off until we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); then the narrator mentioned a similar hadith.
