Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), regarding the saying of Allah Almighty: "Then (the matter) should be pursued with fairness and payment made to him with excellence" [Al-Baqarah: 178], said: "Among the Children of Israel, when someone was killed deliberately, nothing but retaliation (qisas) was lawful for them, and the concession of blood money (diyah) has been made lawful for you. So this one (the heir of the slain) was commanded to pursue it with fairness, and this one (the killer) was commanded to pay with excellence. That is an alleviation from your Lord [Al-Baqarah: 178]."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the last times there will come peoples whose faces will be the faces of human beings but whose hearts will be the hearts of devils. They will be like ravenous wolves; there will be no trace of mercy in their hearts. They will be shedders of blood who do not refrain from any evil. If you follow them, they will deceive you; if you hide from them, they will backbite you; if they speak to you, they will lie; and if you entrust them with something, they will betray the trust. Their child will be unruly, their youth will be a scoundrel, and their elder will neither enjoin good nor forbid evil. Seeking honour through them is humiliation, and desiring what is in their hands is poverty. The forbearing one among them will be (deemed) astray, and the one who enjoins good among them will be held suspect. Among them the believer will be weak and the sinner honoured. Among them the Sunnah will become innovation and innovation will become the Sunnah. At that time the worst of them will be given power over them, and the best of them will supplicate, but their supplication will not be answered."

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This weighed heavily upon me, because believers too fall into sins, until I found it in the Book of Allah. Concerning disobedience to parents: "Would you then, if you were given authority, cause corruption in the land and sever your ties of kinship?" [Muhammad: 22], the whole verse. Concerning reminding of favours: "Do not invalidate your charities by reminders of generosity and by injury" [Al-Baqarah: 264], the whole verse. And concerning wine: "Wine, gambling, idols and divining arrows are all filth" [Al-Ma'idah: 90] up to "so avoid it" [Al-Ma'idah: 90].

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to recite this verse with this reading: "It is not for any prophet that he should act unfaithfully" [Al Imran: 161], and he would say: "And how can it not be possible that (a prophet) be dealt with unfaithfully, when he can even be killed?" (That is, the meaning of the verse is not that a prophet cannot be dealt with unfaithfully.) Allah Almighty says: "And they kill the prophets" [Al Imran: 112]. But the hypocrites had accused the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning something, so Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning that: "It is not for any prophet that he should act unfaithfully" [Al Imran: 161].
