Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to recite this verse with this reading: "It is not for any prophet that he should act unfaithfully" [Al Imran: 161], and he would say: "And how can it not be possible that (a prophet) be dealt with unfaithfully, when he can even be killed?" (That is, the meaning of the verse is not that a prophet cannot be dealt with unfaithfully.) Allah Almighty says: "And they kill the prophets" [Al Imran: 112]. But the hypocrites had accused the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning something, so Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning that: "It is not for any prophet that he should act unfaithfully" [Al Imran: 161].
