Sayyiduna Sawad bin Amr al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I am a man to whom beauty has been made beloved, and I have been given of it what you see, so I do not like anyone to surpass me even in the thong of my sandal - or he said: the strap of my sandal - so is that arrogance? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." I said: Then what is arrogance, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Belittling the truth and looking down on people."

Is that arrogance? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No; rather, arrogance is that a man looks down on people and rejects the truth."
