Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Once, while Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting in the mosque, a man passed through the back part of the mosque. Someone said: O Commander of the Believers, do you know this man passing by? He said: No, who is he? He said: This is Sayyiduna Sawad bin Qarib (may Allah be pleased with him), a man from the people of Yemen who has rank and standing among them, and he is the one to whom his jinn companion brought the news of the appearance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Bring him to me. So he was called and brought. He asked: Are you Sawad bin Qarib? He said: Yes. He asked: Are you the one to whom his jinn companion brought the news of the appearance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes. He asked: Are you still upon your soothsaying (kahanah)? At this he became extremely angry and said: O Commander of the Believers, no one has addressed me like this since I became a Muslim. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Subhan Allah! By Allah, the polytheism we were upon was far greater than your soothsaying. Tell me the story of your jinn bringing you the news of the appearance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Yes, O Commander of the Believers. One night I was between sleep and wakefulness when my jinn came to me, struck me with his foot and said: O Sawad bin Qarib, get up, understand and reflect, if you have any sense: a Messenger has been sent from (the lineage of) Lu'ayy bin Ghalib, calling to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and to His worship. Then the jinn began to recite these verses:
"I marvel at the jinn and their spying, and at their saddling of their camels with their saddle-cloths. They rush towards Makkah seeking guidance; the best of the jinn are not like their impure ones. So journey to the chosen one of Hashim, and raise your eyes towards its head."
He said: I paid no attention to his words and said: Let me sleep, for I have become drowsy this evening. Then, when the second night came, he came to me again, struck me with his foot and said: Did I not tell you, O Sawad bin Qarib: get up, understand and reflect, if you have any sense: a Messenger has been sent from (the lineage of) Lu'ayy bin Ghalib, calling to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and to His worship. Then the jinn recited these verses:
"I marvel at the jinn and their seeking, and at their saddling of the camels with their saddles. They rush towards Makkah seeking guidance; the truthful among the jinn are not like their liars. So journey to the chosen one of Hashim; their foremost are not like their hindmost."
He said: Still I gave his words no importance. Then, when the third night came, he came to me again, struck me with his foot and said: Did I not tell you, O Sawad bin Qarib: understand and reflect, if you have any sense: a Messenger has been sent from (the lineage of) Lu'ayy bin Ghalib, calling to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and to His worship. Then the jinn recited these verses:
"I marvel at the jinn and their news, and at their saddling of the camels with their camel-saddles. They rush towards Makkah seeking guidance; the believer among the jinn is not like its disbeliever. So journey to the chosen one of Hashim, between its hills and its stones."
Then love of Islam entered my heart and I became eager for it. When morning came, I saddled my mount and set off towards Makkah. While I was on the way, I was told that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had migrated to Madinah. So I came to Madinah and asked about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I was told that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the mosque. I reached the mosque and tied up my she-camel, and there were the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Companions sitting around him (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah, listen to my words. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Come closer, come closer, and he kept urging me until I reached a place in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Tell me, recount to me the story of your jinn's coming to you. I said:
"My confidant came to me after part of the night had passed and after sleep, and in all I had tested of him he was never a liar. For three nights, every night, he kept saying: A Messenger has come to you from Lu'ayy bin Ghalib. So I tucked up the hem of my waist-wrap, and a swift, sturdy she-camel carried me through the deserts. And I bear witness that there is no lord besides Allah, and that you are trusted over everything unseen. And that you are, in terms of means of approach (wasilah), the closest of all the messengers to Allah, O son of the most noble and pure. So command us with whatever comes to you, O best of all who have walked the earth, even if what has come contains things that turn the forelocks white. And be an intercessor for me on the Day when no intercessor besides you will avail Sawad bin Qarib."
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions were extremely pleased at my acceptance of Islam, so much so that the joy could be seen on their faces. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) rose, went to him and embraced him, and said: I used to love to hear this (story) from you.

Sayyiduna Sawad bin Qarib al-Azdi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was asleep on one of the mountains of al-Sarah when someone came, struck me with his foot and said: O Sawad bin Qarib, get up; a Messenger has come to you from Lu'ayy bin Ghalib. I sat upright, and he turned away, saying (in the sari' metre): "I marvel at the jinn and their seeking out news, and at their saddling of their camels with their camel-saddles. They rush towards Makkah seeking guidance; their righteous are not like their filthy ones." Then I went back to sleep, and he came again, struck me with his foot and said: O Sawad bin Qarib, get up; a Messenger has come to you from Lu'ayy bin Ghalib. And he turned away, saying: "I marvel at the jinn and their news, and at their loading of their camels with their saddles. They rush towards Makkah seeking guidance; their believers are not like their disbelievers." Then I went back to sleep, and he came again, struck me with his foot and said: O Sawad bin Qarib, get up; a Messenger has come to you from Lu'ayy bin Ghalib. I sat upright, and he turned away, saying: "I marvel at the jinn and their seeking, and at their tying of the camels by their tails. They rush towards Makkah seeking guidance; their truthful one is not like their liar. So journey to the chosen one of Hashim, and raise your eyes towards its head." Then morning came, and I rode my camel until I reached Makkah, and there the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had already appeared (with Islam). I told him (peace and blessings be upon him) the news and became his follower.
