حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ السِّمْسَارُ، وَالْحَسَنُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ الْبَجَلِيُّ، ثنا الْمُعَافَى بْنُ عِمْرَانَ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ سَوَادِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنِّي رَجُلٌ حُبِّبَ إِلَيَّ الْجَمَالُ، وَأُعْطِيتُ مِنْهُ مَا تَرَى، فَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ يَفُوقَنِي أَحَدٌ فِي شِسْعِ نَعْلِي - أَوْ قَالَ: شِرَاكِ نَعْلِي - أَفَمِنَ الْكِبْرِ ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ: «لَا» , قُلْتُ: فَمَا الْكِبْرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ: «مَنْ سَفِهَ الْحَقَّ وَغَمَصَ النَّاسَ»
Sayyiduna Sawad bin Amr al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I am a man to whom beauty has been made beloved, and I have been given of it what you see, so I do not like anyone to surpass me even in the thong of my sandal - or he said: the strap of my sandal - so is that arrogance? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." I said: Then what is arrogance, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Belittling the truth and looking down on people."
