It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman bin Sakhr al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he declared his wife (forbidden) to him like his mother's back until Ramadan had passed (he made zihar). Then she grew plump and healthy, and he had intercourse with her in the middle of Ramadan. Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as though he considered the matter very grave, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Can you free a slave?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Can you fast two consecutive months?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Then can you feed sixty poor people?" He said: No. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Farwah bin Amr, give him that faraq" (which held fifteen sa') "and let him give it to sixty poor people." He said: To someone poorer than me? By the One who sent you with the truth, between the two lava tracts of Madinah there is no household more needy of it than us! So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed, then said: "Take it to your family."

The narrator states that Sayyiduna Salamah bin Sakhr (may Allah be pleased with him) declared his wife, by way of zihar, to be like his mother's back until Ramadan had passed. Then when half the month had passed, he had intercourse with her at night, and he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Free a slave." He said: I do not have one. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Can you fast two consecutive months?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then feed sixty poor people." He said: I do not have the means. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Farwah bin Amr (who used to estimate the yield of the date-palms in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)): "Give him that basket," which held fifteen sa' of dates. He said: "Go and feed sixty poor people."

Sayyiduna Salamah bin Sakhr al-Bayadi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was a man with a very strong desire for women; I did not think any man had a greater share of that than I did. When Ramadan came, I made zihar against my wife until Ramadan ended. Then one night, while she was talking, part of her body became uncovered before me, so I leapt upon her and had intercourse with her. When morning came, I went to my people, told them what had happened, and said to them: Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on my behalf. They said: We will not do that, lest a verse be revealed from Allah concerning us, or a ruling come concerning us from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and a lasting disgrace remain upon us. Rather, we hand you over with your offence; go yourself and explain your case to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator said: So I set out until I came to him and told him the news. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Was it you who did that?" I said: Yes, it was I, and here I am, O Messenger of Allah, enduring patiently whatever Allah decrees for me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Free a slave." I said: By the One who sent you with the truth, I own nothing but my own self. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fast two consecutive months." I said: O Messenger of Allah, this trouble came upon me only because of fasting. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then give charity and feed sixty poor people." I said: By the One who sent you with the truth, we spent this past night without even an evening meal. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go to the one in charge of the charity of Banu Zurayq and tell him to give it to you; then feed sixty poor people and benefit from the rest yourself."
