Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) was in a gathering of his people, narrating to them about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while some of them were busy talking among themselves. So he became angry, and then said: "Just look at them! I am narrating to them about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) what my eyes saw and my ears heard, while some of them are occupied with one another. Behold, by Allah, I will leave you people and never come back to you again." I (Abu Hazim) said to him: Where will you go? He said: "I will go and strive (do jihad) in the path of Allah." I said: You are no longer fit for jihad; you can neither keep steady on a horse, nor wield a sword, nor thrust a spear. He said: "O Abu Hazim, I will go and stand in the rank, and some stray arrow or stone from among them will strike me, and Allah will grant me martyrdom." The narrator says: So he went, and by my life, he came back only wounded.
