Sayyiduna Ziyad bin Labid al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was talking to his Companions and saying: "How will it be when the time of knowledge has gone!" I said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, how can the time of knowledge go when we recite the Qur'an and teach it to our sons, and our sons will teach it to their sons, until the Hour is established? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May your mother be bereaved of you, O Ibn Labid! I used to consider you among the most learned in understanding (fiqh) of the people of Madinah. Do the Jews and Christians not recite the Torah and the Injil, yet they derive no benefit from them?"

I said: O Messenger of Allah, how can knowledge depart when we recite the Qur'an, teach our sons to recite it, and our sons will teach their sons to recite it until the Day of Resurrection? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May your mother be bereaved of you, O Ziyad! I used to consider you among the most learned in understanding (fiqh) of the men of Madinah. Do these Jews and Christians not recite the Torah and the Injil, yet they do not act upon anything of them?"

He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May your mother be bereaved of you, O Ibn Labid! I used to consider you among the most intelligent people of Madinah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, O Ziyad, I used to consider you among the jurists of the Muslims. Do you not know that the Torah and the Injil were revealed to the Jews and Christians, yet what benefit did they bring them when they did not act upon them?"
