حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ، أَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ أَبِي طُوَالَةَ، عَنْ زِيَادِ بْنِ لَبِيدٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ يُقْبَضُ الْعِلْمُ وَنَحْنُ نَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ ونُعَلِّمُهُ أَبْنَاءَنَا وَنِسَاءَنَا وأَرِقَّاءَنَا؟ قَالَ: «وَاللهِ إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأَحْسَبُكَ يَا زِيَادُ لَمِنْ فُقَهَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، أَلَسْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّ التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنْجِيلَ أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَى الْيَهُودِ وَالنَّصَارَى فَمَا نَفَعَهُمْ إِذْ لَمْ يَعْمَلُوا بِهِ؟»
Sayyiduna Ziyad bin Labid al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: O Messenger of Allah, how can knowledge be taken away when we recite the Qur'an and teach it to our sons, our women and our slaves? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, O Ziyad, I used to consider you among the jurists of the Muslims. Do you not know that the Torah and the Injil were revealed to the Jews and Christians, yet what benefit did they bring them when they did not act upon them?"
