Sayyiduna Ziyad bin al-Harith al-Suda'i (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and gave him my pledge of allegiance. Then I learned that he (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to send an army to my people, so I said: O Messenger of Allah, call the army back, and I will take responsibility for their Islam and their obedience. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do so." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote to them, and a delegation of theirs came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the news of their Islam and obedience. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O brother of Suda', you are indeed obeyed among your people." I said: Rather, Allah guided them and was gracious to them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not appoint you as their leader?" I said: Certainly. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed me as their leader and wrote me a document to that effect. I asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) for something from their charities, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) granted that as well.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on one of his journeys in those days. He (peace and blessings be upon him) halted at a place, and we rested at the beginning of the night. I stayed close to him (peace and blessings be upon him), while his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions dropped away one by one until none of them remained with him (peace and blessings be upon him) except me. When the time of dawn drew near, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me, and I gave the call to prayer (adhan). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O brother of Suda', do you have any water?" I said: Yes, but only a little, which will not suffice you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pour it into a vessel and bring it to me." I brought it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) put his hand into it, and I saw a spring gushing between every two of his (peace and blessings be upon him) fingers. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O brother of Suda', were it not that I feel shy before my Lord, we would drink and give you to drink as well. Announce among the people: whoever wishes to perform ablution (wudu), let him do so." So whoever wished took water.

Then Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to call the iqamah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The brother of Suda' has given the adhan, and whoever gives the adhan should also call the iqamah." When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had led the Fajr prayer, the people of that halting place came complaining about their governor, saying: O Messenger of Allah, tell us what matters there were between us and our people in the Jahiliyyah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards his Companions, and I was among them, and said: "There is no good in leadership for a believing man." This statement lodged in my heart.

Then a beggar came and asked him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever asks people while being wealthy, it is a headache for his head and a disease for his stomach." He said: Then give me something from the charities. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty was not content with the judgement of a prophet or anyone else regarding charities, until He Himself fixed eight portions for them; if you are among them, I will give you your due.

When morning came, I said: O Messenger of Allah, take back your leadership; I have no need of it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why?" I said: I heard you saying: "There is no good in leadership for a believing man," and I have become a believer. And I also heard you saying: "Whoever asks of people while being wealthy, it is a headache and a disease of the stomach," yet I too asked of you while I am wealthy. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is how it is; if you wish, take it, and if you wish, leave it." I said: I leave it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then direct me to a man whom I may appoint as leader." So I directed him to a man from the delegation, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed him as leader.

Those people said: O Messenger of Allah, we have a well; in winter its water suffices us and we all gather at it, but in summer it runs low and we scatter to the other waters around us, and today we cannot afford to scatter, because all around us is enemy. Supplicate to Allah that its water may suffice us. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) called for seven pebbles, held them in his palm, then said: "Take them and throw them into the well one by one, and mention the name of Allah." After that those people were no longer able to see the bottom of that well.
