It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We used to rent out land by way of 'muhaqalah' for a third, a quarter or a fixed quantity of grain. Then (the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) ordered us either to cultivate the land ourselves or to have someone else cultivate it, and he disliked renting it out, and anything other than that.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We used to rent out land by way of 'muhaqalah' for a third, a quarter or a fixed quantity of grain. One of my paternal uncles came to me and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has today forbidden us something that was beneficial to us, yet obedience to Allah and His Messenger is more beneficial. We used to rent out land by way of 'muhaqalah' for a third, a quarter or a fixed quantity of grain, and he forbade us to rent it out for a quarter, a third or a fixed quantity of grain, and he ordered the owner of the land to cultivate it himself or have someone else cultivate it.

Then one of my paternal uncles came to us and said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden us something that was beneficial to us, yet obedience to Allah and His Messenger is more beneficial to us. We asked: What is it? He said: The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has land, let him cultivate it himself or have his brother cultivate it, and let him not rent it out for a third, a quarter or a fixed quantity of grain."
