Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to practise 'muhaqalah', and muhaqalah is that a man gives his land for a third, a quarter or a fixed quantity of grain. Then one of my paternal uncles came to us and said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden us something that was beneficial to us, yet obedience to Allah and His Messenger is more beneficial to us. We asked: What is it? He said: The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has land, let him cultivate it himself or have his brother cultivate it, and let him not rent it out for a third, a quarter or a fixed quantity of grain."
