Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to practise 'muhaqalah', and muhaqalah is that a man rents out his land for a third, a quarter or a fixed quantity of grain. Then one of his paternal uncles came and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden us something that was beneficial to us; obedience to Allah and His Messenger is more beneficial to us. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has land, let him cultivate it himself or have his brother cultivate it, and let him not rent it out for a third, a quarter or a fixed quantity of grain."
