It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to practise 'muhaqalah' with land, renting it out for a third, a quarter or a fixed quantity of grain. One day one of my paternal uncles came to us and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden us something that was beneficial to us, yet obedience to Allah and His Messenger is more beneficial to us. He forbade us to rent out land by way of 'muhaqalah' for a third, a quarter or a fixed quantity of grain, and he ordered the owner of the land to cultivate it himself or have someone else cultivate it, and he disliked renting it out, and anything other than that.
