Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 4263 — he said: We used to rent out land by way

حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ الْقَاضِي، ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، قَالَ: كَتَبَ إِلَيَّ يَعْلَى بْنُ حَكِيمٍ، وَسَمِعْتُهُ مِنْهُ بَعْدُ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ يَسَارٍ فَقَالَ، عَنْ رَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ، قَالَ: «كُنَّا نُحَاقِلُ الْأَرْضَ فَنُكْرِيهَا عَلَى الثُّلُثِ وَالرُّبُعِ وَالطَّعَامِ الْمُسَمَّى فَأَمَرَنَا بِالْأَرْضِ أَنْ نَزْرَعَهَا أَوْ نُزْرِعَهَا وَكَرِهَ كِرَاءَهَا وَمَا سِوَى ذَلِكَ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We used to rent out land by way of 'muhaqalah' for a third, a quarter or a fixed quantity of grain. Then (the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) ordered us either to cultivate the land ourselves or to have someone else cultivate it, and he disliked renting it out, and anything other than that.
