Abdullah bin Khabbab (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from his father, Sayyiduna Khabbab bin al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him), that he watched the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) one night. He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed until it was close to dawn, so he said: O Messenger of Allah! I saw you tonight pray a prayer the like of which I have never seen before? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, it was a prayer of hope and fear. I asked my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, for three things; He granted me two and withheld one from me. I asked Him not to destroy us in the way He destroyed the earlier nations, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to set any enemy over us, and He granted me that. And I asked Him not to split my Ummah into sects, and He withheld that from me."

In it I asked my Lord for three things; He granted me two and withheld one from me. I asked Him not to destroy my Ummah by famine, and He granted me that. A man from Abd al-Qays, who used to sit with us in the Jami' Mosque, narrated: I accompanied the people of the Nahr (river) and was among them; then I came to dislike their affair and feared that they might kill me. While I was with a group of them, we came upon a village, and between us and the village there was a river, when a man came out of the village in a state of fear. They said to him: It seems we have frightened you? He said: Yes. They said: You have nothing to fear. I said (to myself): By Allah! They know him and I do not know him. Then they said to him: Are you the son of Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes. They said: Have you heard from your father any hadith that you can narrate to us from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes, I heard my father narrate from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he mentioned a tribulation and said: "The one sitting in it is better than the one standing, the one standing is better than the one walking, and the one walking is better than the one running. If it reaches you, then be the slain servant of Allah." The narrator said: They took him to the bank of the river and slaughtered him, and I saw his blood flowing in the water like a sandal strap, without dispersing. The narrator said: Then they seized his umm walad (slave mother of his child) and killed her; she was pregnant, so they ripped open her belly. I never found the company of any people more hateful to me than theirs, until I found a moment alone and escaped.

They said: Will you narrate to us from your father, from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes, I heard my father narrate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will be a tribulation; the one sitting in it is more excellent than the one standing, the one standing is more excellent than the one walking, and the one walking is more excellent than the one running. When that happens, then be the slain servant of Allah." They said to him: Then be the slain servant of Allah yourself. The narrator said: They took him to the bank of the river and struck his neck, and his blood flowed like a sandal strap, without dispersing. Then they brought his umm walad and ripped open what was in her belly. When I saw that, I separated from them.

A man from Abd al-Qays narrated: When the people split (into factions), I joined a people whose company was dearer to me than that of any other people. We travelled along the bank of a river, and a mosque came into view with a man in it. When he saw the forelocks of the horses, he came out in alarm, dragging his garment. Our commander said to him: Why are you alarmed? He said: You have alarmed me. The narrator said: It turned out that he was Abdullah bin Khabbab. Our commander said to him: Narrate to us a hadith you heard from your father, which he narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator said: So he narrated from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a tribulation: "The one sitting in it is better than the one standing, the one standing is better than the one walking, and the one walking is better than the one running. If it reaches you, then be the slain servant of Allah."
