Abdullah bin Khabbab (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from his father, who said: I watched the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) closely, and I said: I will surely see how the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed, and when he finished, I came before him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! You prayed tonight a prayer the like of which I have never seen before? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It was a prayer of fear and hope. In it I asked my Lord for three things; He granted me two and withheld one from me. I asked Him not to destroy us in the way He destroyed the nations before us, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to set any enemy over us, and He granted me that. And I asked Him not to split us into sects, and He withheld that from me."
