A man from Abd al-Qays narrated: When the people split (into factions), I joined a people whose company was dearer to me than that of any other people. We travelled along the bank of a river, and a mosque came into view with a man in it. When he saw the forelocks of the horses, he came out in alarm, dragging his garment. Our commander said to him: Why are you alarmed? He said: You have alarmed me. The narrator said: It turned out that he was Abdullah bin Khabbab. Our commander said to him: Narrate to us a hadith you heard from your father, which he narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator said: So he narrated from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a tribulation: "The one sitting in it is better than the one standing, the one standing is better than the one walking, and the one walking is better than the one running. If it reaches you, then be the slain servant of Allah." The narrator said: They took him to the bank of the river and slaughtered him, and I saw his blood flowing in the water like a sandal strap, without dispersing. The narrator said: Then they seized his umm walad and killed her; she was pregnant, so they ripped open her belly. After that I never found the company of any people more hateful to me than theirs, until I found a moment alone and escaped.
