( 93 ) وَكَذَلِكَ حَدِيثُ زِيَادِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الصُّدَائِيِّ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Abi Rafi' al-Ta'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the time of the expedition of Dhat al-Salasil came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched an army and appointed Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) as its commander, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was also among them. This is the very expedition of which the people of Syria boast, saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) commander of an army in which Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was also present. He (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered them to take along for jihad any Muslim they met on the way. So they passed by our homes and called us too, and we set out with them. I said (to myself): "I will choose for myself one man from among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) so that I may serve him and gain knowledge from him, for I could not come to Madinah whenever I wished." So I chose Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and kept his company. He had a Fadaki cloak (kisa' fadaki) which he would wrap around himself when riding, and when we made camp we would all cover ourselves with it together. This was the very cloak for which the tribe of Hawazin taunted him, saying: "Shall we follow this man of the coarse cloak (dha al-jilal) after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" When we had finished our expedition and turned back, I had not asked him anything (during the journey). Then I said to him: "I have been in your company and I have a right upon you; I have not asked you anything, so now teach me something that will benefit me, for I am not able to come to Madinah every week." He said: "This very thing was in my mind even before you mentioned it. Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, establish the obligatory prayer, pay the prescribed zakah, perform Hajj to the House, fast Ramadan, and never become the commander of even two men." I said: "As for prayer and zakah, I know them; but as for imarah (leadership), it is through leadership that people obtain good." He said: "You have asked me with full earnestness, so I too have answered you with full sincerity. People entered Islam both willingly and unwillingly, and Allah has granted them protection from injustice. They are under Allah's protection, Allah's neighbours, and in Allah's covenant; so whoever wrongs any one of them is, as it were, breaking the covenant of his Lord. By Allah! If the goat or camel of one of your neighbours is seized, he remains restless for the rest of his life out of anger for his neighbour's sake, and Allah is the greatest protector of His neighbour." Then, when we returned to our homes, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, and the people gave their pledge to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and he was made caliph, I asked: "Who has been made caliph after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" The people said: "That same companion of yours, Abu Bakr." So I came to Madinah and kept looking for an opportunity to meet him until I found him alone. I took his hand and said: "Do you recognise me? I am that same companion of yours." He said: "Yes." I said: "Do you not remember what you told me, that I should never become the commander of even two men, and now you have become the commander of the people?" He said: "When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, the people had only recently come out of Jahiliyyah, and my companions placed this burden upon me, and I feared that the people might apostatise." By Allah! He kept apologising until I accepted his excuse.
And in Jarir's narration there is this addition, that Rafi' bin Abi Rafi' al-Ta'i (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I used to herd goats in the Jahiliyyah; then circumstances kept changing until I became the overseer ('arif) of a settlement during the governorship of al-Hajjaj."
This hadith is gharib (unusual), and Sulayman, the teacher of al-A'mash, I have not yet been able to identify; and Imam Ahmad narrated part of it with another chain.
(93) And likewise is the hadith of Ziyad bin al-Harith al-Suda'i.

It is narrated from Umayr bin Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) as the commander of an expedition. When he returned, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "How did you find your expedition and your command?" So, by Allah, as long as I live I will never accept command over even two men."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he intended to appoint a man from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to some public office, but the man disliked it. At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and said: "Indeed, for this affair (of the caliphate and the running of government) in which we are engaged, it is indispensable to have helpers." When the man saw this, he agreed and said: "Let me go to my family and give them the necessary instructions, then I will come back." He said: "Very well." When he left, his paternal uncle met him and said: "I order you not to accept this office." He asked: "Then what about his order?" The uncle said: "Go back, and I will come with you. When he sees you, he will surely ask: 'Have you not gone yet?' Then say: 'O Commander of the Believers! I seek what is best for myself from you (so that you yourself decide what is better for me).'" He did so, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Who stopped you?" He named his uncle. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Know well! I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say" (and he (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to appoint a man over some responsibility of the Muslims) "and the man said: 'O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I seek from you the best choice for myself.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Then I choose for you that you stay seated (without taking office), for whoever is made commander over ten people will be brought before Allah Almighty on the Day of Resurrection with his hands bound to his neck, until his (just and equitable) deeds alone release him from it.'" At that time Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was reclining; on hearing this he sat up straight and began calling out again and again: "Which deed is it that will release him from it (the burden of command)?"
Ishaq narrated this from Abu Nu'aym al-Mula'i, he from Badr bin Uthman, he from Abu Bakr bin Hafs, he from Sa'd, and he from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bishr bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to him offering him a public office, but he refused to accept it and said: "I have no need of it, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'On the Day of Resurrection the rulers will be brought and made to stand on the bridge over Hell. Whoever was obedient to Allah, Allah Almighty will take hold of him with His right hand (of power) and save him; and whoever was disobedient to Allah, the bridge will give way with him into a blazing valley of fire.'" It is narrated that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) then sent for Sayyiduna Abu Dharr and Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him): "Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied: "Yes, by Allah! And beyond that valley there is another valley of fire." Then he asked Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him), but he disliked telling him anything. At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Who will take it (this office) on, despite these dangerous consequences?" Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said (out of humility and in view of the gravity of the matter): "The one whose nose and eye Allah has taken away and whose cheek has been rubbed in the dust."
Al-Hasan bin Sufyan also narrated it likewise from Abu Bakr.
In the narration of Ahmad bin Mani', Sayyiduna Bishr bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) called on him for help in some matter of the sadaqah, but he refused to do the work. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the reason, and he said that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "On the Day of Resurrection, when the ruler is brought, he will be thrown onto the bridge over Hell. Then Allah Almighty will command the bridge and it will jolt him so violently that every bone of his will be displaced from its place; then Allah will command the bones and they will return to their places. If he was obedient to Allah, Allah will take him by the hand and grant him a double portion of His mercy; and if he was disobedient, the bridge will split open and he will keep falling into Hell for seventy years." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) what we did not hear." At that time Sayyiduna Salman and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with them both) were sitting there. Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Yes, by Allah, O Umar! Along with those seventy years there are seventy more autumns (years) in a valley of fire that blazes continuously." At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) struck his forehead with his hand and said: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return) [Surah al-Baqarah: 156]. Who will take it on with these dangerous consequences?" He replied: "Only the one whose nose Allah has cut off and whose cheek He has pressed to the ground."
In the narration of Abd bin Humayd, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to make Bishr bin Asim a governor, but he refused and related the same hadith: that the ruler will be made to stand on al-Sirat (the bridge) and will be jolted so violently that every limb of his will move from its place; if he was just, he will pass over, and if he was unjust, he will keep falling into the Fire for seventy years. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque with the colour of his face changed (out of fear of Allah). Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "O Commander of the Believers! What is the matter with you?" He said that Bishr bin Asim had told him a hadith, then he related that hadith to him, and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) confirmed that he too had heard it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "After this, who would desire this work (of ruling)?" Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The one whose nose is in the dust and whose cheek is on the ground."
Imam Ibn Mandah says: The narrator who said "from Bishr bin Asim from his father" made an error (wahm), and it is not correct.
This hadith was narrated by Suwayd bin Abd al-Aziz from Abu Wa'il from Bishr bin Asim, and likewise Imam al-Tabarani and others recorded it. Also Ata narrated it from Abdullah bin Sufyan from Bishr bin Asim, which Ibn Mandah recorded with his own chain. So these are chains that strengthen one another.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) as an 'amil (to collect zakah and charity). So he came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to greet him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Sa'd! Beware (of betrayal), lest you come on the Day of Resurrection carrying on your neck a camel that is groaning." He said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! If I do that, is such an end certain?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." He said: "O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You know well that whenever I am asked for something, I give it (out of generosity), so excuse me (from this office)." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) excused (relieved) him.
Imam Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abdullah bin Abd al-Samad narrated to us, from Muhammad bin Humayd, he from Isma'il, he from Ubaydullah bin Umar bin Hafs, he from Nafi', and he through Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), this narration from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
