It is narrated from Umayr bin Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) as the commander of an expedition. When he returned, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "How did you find your expedition and your command?" He said: "I remained in that state until I began to think that those who were with me were my khawal (servants and slaves). So, by Allah, as long as I live I will never accept command over even two men."
The chain of this hadith is jayyid (good), and Imam Musaddad narrated it in his Musnad.
