It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked: "Will you not appoint a successor (after you)?" He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "No; rather, I leave you in the same state in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left you."

It is narrated from Abu Mijlaz (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was lying down, reclining, in one of the gardens of Madinah; then he related the whole story. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Whom will you appoint as caliph after me?" A man among those present said: Al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him). He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then you would make caliph a man who is miserly and harsh-tempered," that is, one whose character is not good. Then a man said: We will make Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) caliph. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "How can you make caliph a man who gave the very first thing the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him, a piece of land, as the dowry (mahr) of a Jewish woman?" Then a man among those present said: We will make Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) caliph. At this he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By my life! You will never make him caliph; but by the One in whose Hand is my soul, if you were to make him caliph, he would keep you (firmly) upon the truth even if you disliked it." The narrator relates that at this Sayyiduna al-Walid bin Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We know who the caliph after you will be. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sat up (straight) and asked: "Who?" He said: Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him); and al-Walid was the maternal half-brother of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then what of Uthman's fondness for wealth and his (excessive) kindness and generosity towards his family?"
Imam Ishaq bin Rahwayh (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded this narration in his Musnad.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah and Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with them both) were talking together in whispers. I asked them: "Do you both remember that counsel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" So they began to recall it together and said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the beginning of this Ummah is with prophethood and mercy; then after that there will be caliphate and mercy; then there will be biting kingship; then will come an era of arrogance, tyranny and corruption in the Ummah. People will regard wine and fornication as lawful, and despite such corruption in the Ummah they will be given help and will go on being given provision until they meet Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."
This hadith is hasan (good).
Imam al-Tayalisi narrated something similar to it through Jarir bin Hazim from Layth.

Masruq relates that a man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: "Did your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tell you how many caliphs there would be after him?" He replied: "Yes, and no one asked me this question before you, although you are younger in age than all those present; they will be twelve leaders (nuqaba'), equal to the number of the leaders of Musa (peace be upon him)."
This chain is hasan (good).
Imam Abu Ya'la also recorded this same narration with his own chain.
Ishaq narrated it by way of Jarir, through Qays bin Abd, the paternal uncle of Imam al-Sha'bi, that a Bedouin came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him); then he mentioned a hadith like it, except that he did not report these words: "You are the youngest of these people."
