قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، ثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ ، عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ ، قَالَ : إِنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أُتِيَ بِنَاسٍ مِنَ الزُّطِّ قَالَ : أَحْسَبُهُمْ قَتَلَهُمْ . ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ ، ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ ، فَقَالَ : اللهُ أَكْبَرُ صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، احْفِرُوا هَذَا الْمَكَانَ لَا بَلْ هَذَا الْمَكَانَ . ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ ، ثُمَّ نَظَرَ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ فَقَالَ : اللهُ أَكْبَرُ صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، احْفِرُوا هَذَا الْمَكَانَ . قَالَ : فَحَفَرُوا فَأَلْقَاهُمْ فِيهِ ، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ ، فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ ، فَقُلْتُ : أَرَأَيْتَ مَا كُنْتَ تَصْنَعُ آنِفًا ، عَهِدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيهِمْ شَيْئًا ؟ قَالَ : لَأَنْ أَخِرَّ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَقُولَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا لَمْ يَقُلْ ، إِنَّمَا أَنَا مُكَائِدٌ ، أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ قُلْتُ : اللهُ أَكْبَرُ صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، احْفِرُوا هَذَا الْمَكَانَ ، مَا كَانَ ؟ .
صَحِيحٌ .

It is narrated from Suwayd bin Ghafalah (may Allah have mercy on him) that some people of the Zutt were brought to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator states: I think he had them killed. Then he looked towards the sky, then looked towards the earth and said: "Allahu akbar, sadaqa Allahu wa rasuluh" (Allah is the Greatest; Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth). Dig a pit in this place; no, rather dig in this place. Then he again looked at the sky and then at the earth and said: "Allahu akbar, sadaqa Allahu wa rasuluh" (Allah is the Greatest; Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth). Dig a pit in this spot. The narrator says: The people dug the pit and he threw them into it (buried them). Then he went in, so I went in to him and said: What do you say about what you were doing just now? Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) give you some covenant (a prophecy or command) concerning these people? He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, falling from the sky to the earth is dearer to me than attributing to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) something he did not say. In fact I am only one employing a stratagem of war. What do you think: if I said, 'Allahu akbar, sadaqa Allahu wa rasuluh' (Allah is the Greatest; Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth), dig a pit in this place, (what would the result be)?" This hadith is sahih (authentic).
قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ ، ثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ الْأَشْقَرُ ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ ، عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنْ سَوَّارٍ أَبِي إِدْرِيسَ ، عَنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ بْنِ نَجَبَةَ ، قَالَ : دَخَلْنَا عَلَى الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، فَقَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : الْحَرْبُ خَدْعَةٌ .
تَابَعَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ ، أَخْرَجَهُ الْبَزَّارُ .

Al-Musayyib bin Najabah narrated: We came to Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he related that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "War is a (battle) stratagem." Muhammad bin Sa'id corroborated this narration from Abdullah bin Bukayr, and Imam al-Bazzar also narrated it.
وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَاسِرٍ عَمَّارٌ ، ثَنَا هِشَامٌ أَبُو الْمِقْدَامِ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَلَامٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : الْحَرْبُ خِدَاعٌ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "War is nothing but a (battle) stratagem."
