The share of the horseman

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) assigned (when distributing the spoils of war) "two shares for the horse and one share for its rider."

Another report with the same meaning is also narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), in which he stated the like of it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Miqdad bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) assigned shares for him from the spoils of war on the day of the Battle of Badr, the details being that he (peace and blessings be upon him) allotted two shares for his horse and one share for him himself.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) that "he was present at the Battle of Hunayn with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) assigned (when distributing the spoils of war) two shares for his horse and one share for him himself."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "A share (of the spoils of war) is fixed for the horse, and in this ruling the horse of Arab breed and that of non-Arab breed are equal."

Abdullah bin Sulayman said: I asked Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) about this (issue), and he said: "They are both equal."

Muhammad bin Umar also recorded the like of it by way of Khalid bin Ilyas, from Aban bin Salih, from Ata' bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him).

It is narrated from Imam Malik and Imam Sufyan al-Thawri (may Allah have mercy on them both) that they both said: "They are both equal in receiving the two shares (of the spoils of war)," meaning that there is no difference in the distribution of spoils between the pure-bred Arab horses and the non-Arab horses of Turkish and Tatar breed (baradhin); rather, both are equally entitled.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ruhm and his brother (may Allah be pleased with them both) that "they both took part in the fighting as horsemen on the day of the Battle of Hunayn, and they were given six shares (of the spoils of war): four of them for their two horses and two shares for the two of them; then they sold those two shares for two young camels."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that "the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave, on the occasion of the Battle of Badr, two shares (of the spoils of war) for the horse and one share for the foot soldier."
