Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Waraqah bin Nawfal and Zayd bin Amr set out in search of religion. They passed through Syria, and there Waraqah adopted Christianity. Zayd was told: "What you are seeking lies ahead." So he went on until he reached Mosul, where there was a monk. The monk asked: "Where has this rider come from?" Zayd said: "From near the House built by Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him)." The monk asked: "What are you seeking?" Zayd replied: "Religion." The monk offered him Christianity, but Zayd refused to accept it and said: "I have no interest in it." The monk said: "What you are seeking will soon appear in your own land." Then he set off, saying:
"Here I am, in truth, in truth, in worship and in gentleness. I seek the righteousness that I have not yet found. Is there any emigrant like the one who said it? I seek refuge in the One with whom Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) sought refuge, while he was standing."
Then he would bow down and prostrate towards the Ka'bah.
The narrator says: Once Zayd bin Amr passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). At that time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) were eating food taken out of their bag. The two of them invited him, but he said: "O my nephew! I do not eat an animal that has been slaughtered at an idol." The narrator says: After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was never seen eating anything that had been slaughtered at an idol, until he was sent as a prophet. The narrator says: Once Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! (My late father) Zayd was just as you yourself saw him, or as you were informed about him; so please pray for his forgiveness." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Very well; you too should pray for his forgiveness! For on the Day of Resurrection he will be raised as a nation by himself."
Tabarani recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form; its chain contains a narrator, al-Mas'udi, whose memory became confused (ikhtilat), and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On a hot day in Makkah I went out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had me seated behind him on his mount. We went towards one of the idols, where we had slaughtered a goat and then cooked it. The narrator says: Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the two of them greeted each other with the greeting of the Days of Ignorance. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Zayd! Why is it that I see your people harbour dislike towards you?" Zayd said: "By Allah, O Muhammad! I have done them no wrong. Rather, I went out in search of the true religion until I came to the Jewish scholars of Fadak, and I found that they worship Allah Almighty and also ascribe partners to Him. I said: 'What is this religion? Is it the one I set out to seek?' Then I went on until I came to the scholars of Syria, and I found that they too worship Allah and ascribe partners to Him. I said: 'This is not the religion I am seeking.' An old man among them said: 'The religion you are asking about, to our knowledge no one worships Allah according to it except one man, who is in al-Hirah.' So I left and came to that man. When he saw me, he asked: 'Where are you from?' I said: 'From the people who live by the House of Allah, from the people of thorns and qaraz trees.' He said: 'The religion you are seeking has appeared in your land; a prophet has been sent whose star has appeared, and all the people you have seen are astray.' O Muhammad! After that I have not perceived anything." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed the food before him. He asked: "O Muhammad! What is this?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a goat that we slaughtered at one of the idols' altars." He said: "I do not eat the meat of an animal over which the name of Allah was not mentioned at slaughter."
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the House of Allah; we separated from one another. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) circumambulated the House, and I with him. At that time, between Safa and Marwah there were two idols made of brass; one of them was called Isaf and the other Na'ilah. When the polytheists circumambulated, they would touch these two with their hands. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not touch these two, for they are filth." I thought to myself that I would certainly touch them, so that I could see what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say. I touched them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Zayd! Were you not forbidden?"
Then Zayd bin Amr passed away. Then revelation came down to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He will be raised as a nation by himself."
Abu Ya'la, al-Bazzar and Tabarani recorded it; however, Tabarani's wording has: Zayd bin Amr says: I told the monk about the purpose for which I had set out, and he said to me: "All the people you have seen are astray. You are asking about the religion of Allah and of His angels. A prophet has appeared in your land, or is about to appear; go back, believe him and have faith in him."
This narration also has these words: Zayd said: "I will not eat anything that has been slaughtered for other than Allah."
The narrators of Abu Ya'la and al-Bazzar, and of one of Tabarani's chains, are the narrators of the Sahih, except Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqamah, who is hasan al-hadith (good in hadith).

Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: In the Days of Ignorance, Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl used to stand by the Ka'bah, press his back against the Ka'bah and say: "O people of Quraysh! Apart from myself, I find no one on the face of the earth following the religion of Ibrahim." The narrator says: He had abandoned the worship of idols and had given up eating the animals slaughtered at the idols. When a girl was going to be buried alive, he would pay a ransom and save her from being killed. Amr bin Zayd bin Nufayl composed these verses: "I have set the jinn and the jann apart from me; this is what the strong and patient person does."
