Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On a hot day in Makkah I went out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had me seated behind him on his mount. We went towards one of the idols, where we had slaughtered a goat and then cooked it. The narrator says: Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the two of them greeted each other with the greeting of the Days of Ignorance. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Zayd! Why is it that I see your people harbour dislike towards you?" Zayd said: "By Allah, O Muhammad! I have done them no wrong. Rather, I went out in search of the true religion until I came to the Jewish scholars of Fadak, and I found that they worship Allah Almighty and also ascribe partners to Him. I said: 'What is this religion? Is it the one I set out to seek?' Then I went on until I came to the scholars of Syria, and I found that they too worship Allah and ascribe partners to Him. I said: 'This is not the religion I am seeking.' An old man among them said: 'The religion you are asking about, to our knowledge no one worships Allah according to it except one man, who is in al-Hirah.' So I left and came to that man. When he saw me, he asked: 'Where are you from?' I said: 'From the people who live by the House of Allah, from the people of thorns and qaraz trees.' He said: 'The religion you are seeking has appeared in your land; a prophet has been sent whose star has appeared, and all the people you have seen are astray.' O Muhammad! After that I have not perceived anything." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed the food before him. He asked: "O Muhammad! What is this?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a goat that we slaughtered at one of the idols' altars." He said: "I do not eat the meat of an animal over which the name of Allah was not mentioned at slaughter."
Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the House of Allah; we separated from one another. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) circumambulated the House, and I with him. At that time, between Safa and Marwah there were two idols made of brass; one of them was called Isaf and the other Na'ilah. When the polytheists circumambulated, they would touch these two with their hands. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not touch these two, for they are filth." I thought to myself that I would certainly touch them, so that I could see what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say. I touched them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Zayd! Were you not forbidden?"
Then Zayd bin Amr passed away. Then revelation came down to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He will be raised as a nation by himself."
Abu Ya'la, al-Bazzar and Tabarani recorded it; however, Tabarani's wording has: Zayd bin Amr says: I told the monk about the purpose for which I had set out, and he said to me: "All the people you have seen are astray. You are asking about the religion of Allah and of His angels. A prophet has appeared in your land, or is about to appear; go back, believe him and have faith in him."
This narration also has these words: Zayd said: "I will not eat anything that has been slaughtered for other than Allah."
The narrators of Abu Ya'la and al-Bazzar, and of one of Tabarani's chains, are the narrators of the Sahih, except Muhammad bin Amr bin Alqamah, who is hasan al-hadith (good in hadith).
