Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 16184

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The delegation of the tribe of Abd al-Qays came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Which of you knows Quss bin Sa'idah al-Iyadi?" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! We all know him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How is he?" The people said: "He has passed away." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have not forgotten him. I met him at the fair of Ukaz in a sacred month; he was riding a red camel, addressing the people and saying:
'O people! Gather together, listen and retain what you hear. Whoever lives will die, and whoever dies is gone. Whatever is to come will surely come. In the sky there is news, and on the earth there are lessons: a bed that has been spread out, a roof that has been raised high, stars that move about, and seas that do not sink away. Quss swears a true oath: if there is pleasure on earth, then after it there will surely be displeasure. Allah Almighty has a particular religion that is more beloved to Allah Almighty than this religion of yours which you follow. Why is it that I see people go away and never return? Are they pleased with that place and so have stayed there? Or have they been left to themselves and fallen asleep?'"
Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is there anyone among you who can recite his poetry?" So someone among them recited these verses of his:
"In those who passed away in earlier centuries there are lessons of insight for us. When I saw the watering places of death, I found no way back out from them. And I saw my people, young and old (all) running towards it (death). The one who has passed (whether a time or a person) will not come back to you, and none of those who remain will stay (forever in the world). So (seeing all this, I became certain) that I too must go where the people (that is, everyone else) have gone."
Tabarani and al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin al-Hajjaj al-Lakhmi, who is a kadhdhab (liar).
