Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came as part of the delegation of the tribe of "Thaqif," when they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We put on our garments at the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then those people asked: "Who will look after our mounts?" Every one of them wanted to go in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and no one liked to stay behind. I was the youngest of them. I said: "If you wish, I will hold these mounts for you, on condition that you give me this pledge in the name of Allah: that when you come out, you will also give me the chance." They said: "You have that." Then they went in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then they came back and said: "Come on! Let us go." I asked: "Where?" They said: "To your home." I said: "I have come out from my home, and now that I have reached the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), should I go back without meeting him? You gave me a pledge, as you know." They said: "Very well, then come back quickly, for we have asked all the questions on your behalf; we have left nothing out; we have asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about everything." The narrator says: Then I went in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah Almighty for me that He grant me understanding and comprehension of the religion." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What did you say?" I repeated my words before him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have asked me about something that none of your companions asked me about. Go! You are the leader over those people, and you will be the leader over every person of your people to whom you come." After this the narrator mentioned the complete report.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Hakim bin Hakim bin Abbad, though he has been declared trustworthy.

In another, abridged report these words are transmitted: The narrator says: I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him for a copy of the Qur'an (mushaf) that he had with him, and he gave it to me.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on the pulpit with a written document in his blessed hand. He said: "I will give this document to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and whom Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) love. O Uthman bin Abi al-As! Stand up." So Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) handed that document to him.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Isma'il bin Ya'la Abu Umayyah, who is da'if (weak).

Abu Nadrah narrates: I came to Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) during the ten days (perhaps meaning that I came during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah). He had a room which he had set aside for conversation. A ram was led past him, and he asked the ram's owner: "For how much did you buy this?" He said: "For twelve dirhams." The narrator says: I said: "If I had twelve dirhams, I would have bought a ram with them, offered the sacrifice and fed my family." When I got up from his company, a messenger of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came after me with a purse containing fifty dirhams. I have never seen dirhams with more blessing than those. He gave them to me hoping for reward through it, and I was in need of them.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
