Nawfal bin Musahiq narrates: Once Sayyiduna Uthman bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) was talking with Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him); he was an official appointed by Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Something he said angered Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) picked up a handful of pebbles from the ground and threw them at him. One of the stones struck Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) on the forehead, and blood came out from there and ran down onto his beard. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) felt regret at this and said: "Wipe the blood from your beard!" Sayyiduna Uthman bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Commander of the Believers! Do not let this distress you. By Allah! I have been harsher with the people over whose affairs you appointed me than you have been with me." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) liked this statement of his, and his favour towards him increased.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Nawfal bin Musahiq, who is thiqah (trustworthy).
