Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A man from the Ansar came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and submitted: O Messenger of Allah, the Jews have martyred my brother. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him. Allah Almighty will grant victory at his hands, and He will give you power over your brother's killer." (The narrator says:) The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained eager for this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and tied the banner for him. He submitted: O Messenger of Allah, as you can see, I am suffering from eye inflammation. The narrator says: At that time he had eye inflammation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his saliva in his eyes, and after that he had no further complaint, and then he set off.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ahmad bin Sahl bin Ali al-Bahili, whom I do not know; the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Jumay' bin Umayr narrates: I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): Tell me about Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say on the day of Khaybar: "I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him." The narrator says: It is as if I can still see the scene: the banner was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was holding it close to himself. At that time Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was suffering from eye inflammation because of the smoke of the fortress. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) handed the banner to him, and by Allah, the horsemen had not yet even gathered in full when Allah Almighty conquered the fortress at the hands of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Jumay' bin Umayr, who is da'if (weak), though he has been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent to Khaybar (the narrator says: I think the wording is) Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he and those with him came back in retreat. The next day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too came back in retreat, accusing his companions of cowardice while his companions accused him of cowardice. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tomorrow I will give the banner to the man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him. He will not return until Allah Almighty grants him victory." Then all the people came forward together. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Where is Ali? At that time he was suffering pain in his eyes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his saliva in his eyes, then gave him the banner; he waved the banner, and Allah Almighty granted him victory.

Sayyiduna Abu Layla (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (the narrator says: he used to talk with Sayyiduna Ali at night; he said to him): People object to you that you come out in the summer wearing winter clothes and in the winter wearing light clothes. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Were you not with us? I replied: Yes indeed. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), tied a banner for him and then sent him. He set out with the people but came back in retreat. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and tied a banner for him; he too went and then came back in retreat with the people. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him. Allah Almighty will grant him victory, and he is not one to flee (that is, he will not turn back)." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me, and I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) unable to see anything. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his saliva in my eyes, then prayed: "O Allah, suffice him against the pain of heat and cold." (Sayyiduna Ali said:) After that, neither heat nor cold ever troubled me.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, who has a poor memory; the remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
