Sayyiduna Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to enter while a slave-girl was playing the daff. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came in. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission and came in. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission to enter, and the slave-girl stopped. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Uthman is a modest man."
Ahmad recorded it from a man of the Bajilah tribe, from Sayyiduna Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him). He did not name that man, and the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyidah Hafsah bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, and he had moved his garment off his thighs. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked for permission to enter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission and remained as he was. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked for permission. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission and remained as he was. Then some other people from among his Companions came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them permission. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission and remained as he was. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked for permission, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his garment over his thighs and then gave him permission. They talked for a while and then left. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with them) and some other Companions of yours came, yet you remained in the same state and did not move; but when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was about to come in, you covered your thighs with your garment? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Should I not feel shy before one before whom even the angels feel shy?
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Abu Ya'la recorded it in a much abridged form. Its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting, and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was sitting behind him. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission to enter and came in. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission and came in. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission and came in. Then Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission and came in. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for permission and came in. Before this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had been talking with the garment moved off his knees, but when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew the garment over his knees and said to his wife: Get up and move away from me! They talked for a while and then left. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Your Companions came to you, yet you did not adjust your garment and did not move me away from you, until Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and then you did so. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Should I not feel shy before one before whom the angels feel shy? By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the angels feel shy before Uthman just as they feel shy before Allah and His Messenger. Had he come in while you were sitting close to me, he would not have raised his head or spoken a word until he left.
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Ibrahim bin Umar bin Aban, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in a house wearing a waist-wrap, which he had moved off his legs, and his thighs were uncovered. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked for permission to enter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission and he came in. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission and he came in. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he got up quickly and went inside the house. This weighed upon Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and when the people had left, she said: O Messenger of Allah! Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came and you did not change your state, but when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came in, you got up? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aishah! Should I not feel shy before a person before whom even the angels feel shy? Indeed, the angels feel shy before Uthman."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded it in a much abridged form. Its chain contains al-Nadr Abu Umar, who is matruk (abandoned).
