Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 14505

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in a house wearing a waist-wrap, which he had moved off his legs, and his thighs were uncovered. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked for permission to enter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission and he came in. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission and he came in. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he got up quickly and went inside the house. This weighed upon Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and when the people had left, she said: O Messenger of Allah! Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came and you did not change your state, but when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came in, you got up? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aishah! Should I not feel shy before a person before whom even the angels feel shy? Indeed, the angels feel shy before Uthman."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded it in a much abridged form. Its chain contains al-Nadr Abu Umar, who is matruk (abandoned).
