Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A woman brought her child to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! He suffers from possession by a jinn; it seizes him at our mealtimes and spoils our food for us." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over his chest and supplicated for him. He then vomited, and something like a black puppy came out of his mouth, and he became well.
In one narration the words are: The word "tha'ah" means: he coughed.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Farqad al-Sabakhi, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and al-Ijli declared thiqah (trustworthy), and others declared da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna al-Wazi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and with me was al-Ashajj, al-Mundhir bin Asim (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) Amir bin al-Mundhir. With them was a person who was afflicted with madness. They came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When those people saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they leapt down from their mounts and kissed the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then al-Ashajj dismounted; he tied up the people's mounts, took out his bag and opened it, (and, having changed his clothes,) he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and greeted him with salam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ashajj! There are two qualities in you which Allah Almighty and His Messenger love: hilm (forbearance) and anah (deliberateness, not being hasty)." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Have I adopted them myself, or has Allah Almighty placed them in my nature?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, Allah Almighty has placed them in your nature." He said: "All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has placed in my nature two traits which Allah and His Messenger love." Sayyiduna al-Wazi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! With us is a relative who is possessed by a jinn, so supplicate to Allah Almighty for him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where is he? Bring him to me!" The narrator says: I treated that man the same way that Sayyiduna al-Ashajj (may Allah be pleased with him) had done: I dressed him in fine clothes, then I brought him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of his cloak and raised it, until I could see the whiteness of his (peace and blessings be upon him) armpit. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his back and said: "Get out, O enemy of Allah!" So he turned his face away and left, and then that man began to see properly.
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a woman, Hind bint al-Wazi', and I do not know her. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyidah Umm Aban bint al-Wazi' (may Allah be pleased with her) relates the statement of her father: Her grandfather Sayyiduna al-Wazi' (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and with him was a son of his (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) a nephew of his (sister's son), who was suffering from madness. My grandfather says: When we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah, I said: "O Messenger of Allah! With me is a nephew of mine (brother's son) (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) a nephew of mine (sister's son), who is afflicted with madness. I have brought him to you; supplicate to Allah Almighty for him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring him to me." The narrator says: I went to that boy, who was among the riders, and I freed him; I had his travelling clothes taken off and dressed him in two fine garments. Then I took hold of his hand and brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring him close to me and turn his back towards me." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of him by his garment, from the collar, from above and from below, and struck his back, until I could see the whiteness of the armpits of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: "Get out, O enemy of Allah! Get out, O enemy of Allah!" So that boy began to see properly, and his eyes were no longer as they had been before. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated him in front of himself, supplicated for him and passed his hand over his face. After the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), there was no one in that delegation who was superior to that boy.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and no one other than Matar has narrated from the woman named Umm Aban.
Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about forgetting the Qur'an. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck my chest with his blessed hand and said: "O Shaytan! Get out of the chest of Uthman!" The narrator says: After that, whatever verse I tried to remember, I did not forget any of it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Uthman bin Bishr, and I do not know him; the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Some hadiths related to this meaning have come in various places throughout the book.
