Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Makkah, and he was among a few of his Companions. Meanwhile he said: "Let one man among you get up and come with me, and let no man come with me who has even a speck's weight of deceit in his heart." The narrator says: So I got up with him. I took a vessel, thinking that there would be water in it. I set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until we reached the upper part of Makkah, and there I saw some figures. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a line for me and then said: "You are to stay here until I come to you." So I stood, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to those people. I saw those people coming towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept talking with them for a long part of the night, until, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, he asked me: "O Ibn Mas'ud! Have you been standing since then?" I said: "Yes! Did you not tell me to keep standing until you came to me?" The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "Do you have water for ablution?" I said: "Yes!" The narrator says: When I opened the vessel, there was nabidh (date infusion) in it. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah! I took this vessel because I thought there would be water in it, but there is nabidh in it." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The date is a pure thing, and the water is purifying." The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with it. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to pray, two individuals from among them came to him. They both said: "O Messenger of Allah! It is our wish that you lead us in prayer." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made them both stand behind him, then he led us in prayer. When he finished the prayer, I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Who were these?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These were jinn from Nasibin who came to me; they had brought a dispute regarding various matters that were going on between them. They asked me about provision (or: they asked me for provision), and I gave it to them." The narrator says: I said to him: "O Messenger of Allah! Do you have anything that you gave them as provision?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have given them bone as provision, and I have given them that whatever dung they find will be like barley for them, and whatever bone they find will be a bone with meat on it." The narrator says: On that occasion the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (people) to cleanse themselves after relieving themselves (istinja) with bone or dung. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Abu Dawud and others recorded it in abridged form.
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Zayd, the freed slave of Amr bin Hurayth, and he is majhul (unknown).
It is narrated from him that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and said: "I have been commanded to recite to your brothers among the jinn, so let one man get up and come with me, and let no man get up who has a mustard seed's weight of arrogance in his heart." The narrator says: So I got up with him. I took a vessel which had nabidh (date infusion) in it and set out. When we reached that place, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a line for me and said to me: "Do not go outside it, for if you go outside it, you will not see me, nor will I see you, until the Day of Resurrection." The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went away and disappeared from my sight, until I could not see him. When the time of true dawn came, he came back and said to me: "I see you standing." I said: "I did not sit down at all." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What harm would there have been for you if you had done so?" I said: "I feared that I might go out of it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you had gone out of it, you would not have seen me, nor would I have seen you, until the Day of Resurrection. Do you have water for ablution?" I said: "No!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is in this vessel?" I said: "There is nabidh in it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The date is pure, and the water is pure." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and offered the prayer. When he had offered the prayer, two individuals from the jinn came to him and asked him for food. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have I not ordered for the two of you and for your people that which is suitable for you?" They both said: "Yes! But it was our wish that some of us join the prayer behind you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who are you two?" They both said: "We are people from Nasibin." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These two have succeeded, and their people have succeeded." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered for the two of them dung and bone, that they would become food and meat. After this the narrator mentioned the full hadith.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator Abu Zayd and a narrator Qays bin al-Rabi', and a group (of scholars) has declared him da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the night of the meeting with the jinn, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me to come along with him, so I set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until we reached the upper part of Makkah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a line for me and said: "Stay right here." Then he went towards the jinn. I saw some figures coming down from the tops of the mountains towards him, until they came between me and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I drew my sword and thought that I would certainly strike with it and save the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then I remembered the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that I was to stay right here until he came to me. The narrator says: The situation continued like this until, when true dawn began to break, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came. I was standing at that time. He said: "Have you remained in this state all along?" I said: "Even if a month had passed, I would have remained like this until you came to me." Then I told him what I had intended to do. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you had gone out of it, you and I would not have met until the Day of Resurrection." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) interlaced his fingers with my fingers and then said: "I was promised that humans and jinn would believe in me. As for humans, they are believing in me, and as for the jinn, you have seen." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I think that my time has drawn near." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you not appoint Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) as successor?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away from me, and I felt that perhaps this was not suitable. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you not appoint Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) as successor?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away from me, and I realised that this too was not suitable in his view. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you not appoint Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as successor?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One besides whom there is no god, he is such a person that if you pledge allegiance to him and obey him, he will cause all of you to enter Paradise."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Ya'la al-Aslami, and he is da'if (weak).
