عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ - يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ - قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " إِيَّاكُمْ وَهَاتَانِ اللُّعْبَتَانِ الْمَرْسُومَتَانِ اللَّتَانِ تَزْجُرَانِ زَجْرًا ، فَإِنَّهُمَا مَيْسِرُ الْعَجَمِ " . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَرِجَالُ الطَّبَرَانِيِّ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of the pieces of these two marked games (that is, chess or backgammon), both of which are driven along (perhaps meaning that in this game the opponent's piece is struck down), for they are the gambling of the non-Arabs."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it. The narrators of al-Tabarani are the narrators of the Sahih.

وَعَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ - يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ - قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ : قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَقُولُ : " مَثَلُ الَّذِي يَلْعَبُ بِالنَّرْدِ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فَيُصَلِّي ، مَثَلُ الَّذِي يَتَوَضَّأُ بِالْقَيْحِ وَدَمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فَيُصَلِّي " . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَأَبُو يَعْلَى وَزَادَ : " لَا تُقْبَلُ صَلَاتُهُ " . وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ مُوسَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْخَطْمِيُّ ، وَلَمْ أَعْرِفْهُ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِ أَحْمَدَ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Sa'id narrates: I heard my father say: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "The one who plays nard (backgammon or chess) and then gets up and performs the prayer is like the one who performs ablution with pus and the blood of swine and then performs the prayer."
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, and he added these words: "His prayer is not accepted."
Al-Tabarani also recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Musa bin Abd al-Rahman al-Khatmi, and I do not know him. The rest of Ahmad's narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " اللَّاعِبُ بِالنَّرْدِ كَوَاضِعِ يَدَهُ فِي لَحْمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ ، وَالنَّاظِرُ إِلَيْهَا كَوَاضِعِ يَدَهُ فِي دَمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ ثَابِتُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who plays nard (chess or backgammon) is like one who puts his hands into the flesh of swine, and the one who looks at it (chess or backgammon) is like one who puts his hand into the blood of swine."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Thabit bin Zuhayr, and he is da'if (weak).

وَعَنْهُ قَالَ : جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَ : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْبَارِحَةَ فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَيَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِلَّا رَفَعَهُ اللَّهُ دَرَجَةً فِي الْجَنَّةِ ، إِلَّا أَصْحَابَ الشَّاهِ ، وَهِيَ الشِّطْرَنْجُ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ ثَابِتُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Prophet of Allah, last night I saw in a dream that every servant who testifies that there is no god but Allah Almighty and testifies that you are the Messenger of Allah, Allah Almighty raises his rank in Paradise, except the people of the 'shah', whose case is different." (The narrator says:) This refers to chess.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Thabit bin Zuhayr, and he is da'if (weak).

وَعَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ : سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - رَجُلًا يَقُولُ لِرَجُلٍ : تَعَالَ أُقَامِرُكَ . فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَتَصَدَّقَ بِصَدَقَةٍ . رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى ، وَفِيهِ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الصَّدَفِيُّ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man saying to another man: "Come, let me gamble with you." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that man to give charity.
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Mu'awiyah bin Yahya al-Sadafi, and he is da'if (weak).

وَعَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ : " اجْتَنِبُوا هَذِهِ الْكِعَابَ الْمَوْسُومَةَ الَّتِي يُزْجَرُ بِهَا زَجْرًا ، ( فَإِنَّهَا مِنَ الْمَيْسِرِ ) " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِيهِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، وَهُوَ مَتْرُوكٌ .
Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reports about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to say: "Avoid the pieces of these marked game pieces (that is, chess), both of which are driven along (perhaps meaning that in this game the opponent's piece is struck down), for they are part of gambling."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Yazid, and he is matruk (abandoned).
