It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and perhaps it is a marfu' hadith: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty says: 'Whoever humbles himself for Me like this' (here the narrator Yazid turned his palm toward the ground and brought it close to the ground, and then narrated these words:) 'I raise him like this,' then he turned his palm toward the sky and raised both hands toward the sky."
Ahmad, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it, and his wording is: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said on the pulpit: "O people, adopt humility, for I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty grants him elevation and says: "Rise up (or stand upright)! May Allah Almighty keep you standing (or upright)." Such a person is great in the eyes of people and small in his own self. And whoever is arrogant, Allah Almighty cuts him down and says: "Be disgraced!" So he is small in the eyes of people while he considers himself great.'"
The narrators of Ahmad and of al-Bazzar are the narrators of the Sahih, and the chain of al-Tabarani contains a narrator, Sa'id bin Salam al-Attar, and he is a kadhdhab (liar).
