Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 13072

It is narrated from him that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no person but that in his head there is a bridle, and that bridle is in the hand of an angel. If he adopts humility, it is said to the angel: 'Raise the bridle.' And when that person wants to exalt himself (that is, does so out of arrogance), it is said to the angel: 'Lower the bridle' (the narrator has a doubt; perhaps the words are:) 'Lower his bridle.'"
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).
