Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh bin Amr al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of sitting in the streets; whoever sits in the street should give it its right." The narrator says: We said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is its right?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Lowering the gaze, returning the greeting, enjoining good and forbidding evil."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Abdullah bin Sa'id al-Maqburi, who is extremely da'if (weak).

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to one of the gatherings of the Ansar, in which there were some people from among the Ansar. He gave the greeting of peace and they returned the greeting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not like that gathering. The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, this is a way of sitting in which our forefathers used to sit in the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah), so we liked to keep this gathering alive and to sit in it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you insist on doing so, then return the greeting, lower your gazes and guide people on the way."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Salih bin Musa al-Talhi, who is matruk (abandoned).
